Here is my group shot of non charlow barlows.

Colonial Diamond Edge
Kabar
Camillius
Boker
Colonial Old Cutler

The old cutler is the new addition...anyone able to distinguish what type of wood the handles are made of. It has a lovely fit and finish.

Well, I'll be. It was (repeatedly) viewing this very picture-- yours, as it turns out, elsewhere-- that helped me decide to go back and get the stainless version I'd just discovered at a local store.

A very belated thank you. :)

Grand Canyon Bone on that one?? Böker turn out a very decent knife, and that one looks the part.

Thanks, Will

Yes, on both counts-- Grand Canyon Bone, and a nice, solid knife. The fit on my Solingen neo-Russell razor barlow of the same ilk is a little better, but the Boker is no slouch.

And, as you can see in the picture in my previous post, its bone compares well to some I consider my finest, that of the horsecut #25.

Sometimes you just have to put in a bid, hoping no-one notices that good deal! Every once in a while, the Knife Angels smile on you!!

Gabriel; "Bid $51! You will get it for sure! Just keep helping those old codgers cross the street!!"

Me: "Thanks Gabe! I appreciate you looking after me!"

My newest addition shot in two different angles of light. As usual, fit and finish is top notch.

Thanks again Charlie!

The above makes me wish I'd gone Red, wonderful.

Sarah, the Grand Canyon Bone is interesting, but it seems to vary somewhat. The Böker Copperhead I have in it is rather different from the Stockman. The former has exceptionally deep jigging and very thick slabs, the latter not so much but still great. Had these knives since 08 I think, these are carbon knives.

Regards, Will

Always a pleasure to read this thread :)

Nice Boker Pertinux

At a bit of loss where the difference between "grizzly cut" "horse cut" and "grandcanyon" is.
Are these terms related to brand? Or (and forgive me if I missed it) is there some slight difference? Not that it really matters -they all look good!
cheers.

Pertinux, glad my photo could be of assistance in obtaining a new knife (happens to me quite often)! My knife is Grand Canyon bone, it is a favorite - thanks for the compliments. OH

Well done Sara, that's a great looking knife! Wow! whe you say "I had to go back"...ummmmm how did you actually get past it in the first place!!!

Grizzly cut and horse cut are GEC jigging, while grand canyon is Boker. Horse cut is the most random and the deepest jigging, while grizzly seems to be larger (wider) and more uniform.
Horse cut also comes in different colors, while grizzly is always the same natural bone to burnt color.

Someone else said the grand canyon is not very consistent from one knife to another, so I can't generalize other than it is similar.

I discovered it while doing a passing impression of a responsible adult. ;)

More seriously, at the time I was right on the cusp of deciding that I actually would enjoy a selection of knives more than some other items or preoccupations I'd carried forward to date, and began liquidating and redistributing accordingly.

A year ago, adding another knife (of all things!) seemed absurd. Imagine!

Plus, I prefer carbon blades, so I considered this one's being stainless to be a strike against it.

From what I've seen, "yes" to both-- what manufacturers and/or bone suppliers have chosen to call certain types of jigging. Even GEC's "horsecut" can be different from knife to knife, if generally similar.

Well, since we are nearing Sheepfoot Day* , I thought I'd share a pic or two of said blades:
Sheepfootblades0_zps9741a042.jpg

The Barlows from the top down are, Robeson, Schrade and KeenKutter.
The Jack is a Kutmaster, included because the blade is interesting.
Sheepfootblades1_zpsa390a2e4.jpg

The Schrade is worn some, and I think its original shape was closer to the Kutmaster than the others, going by the angle at the tip-end.
Sheepfootblades2_zps194e0c9a.jpg

The Robeson long pull gives the blade an odd, awkward appearance, although the placement gives lots of leverage. I'd rather see it moved back a little.
The Keen looks big, square and business-like, but I prefer the appearance of the Kutmaster Jack. It could be slightly more square, but that would be too perfect!

It has occurred to me, that this group that lurks in these woods - yeah I'm talking about YOU! - is probably the most critical, discerning bunch of afficionados I have ever seen!
So tell me your thoughts!!;)

*(does it show how excited I am about this?)

I prefer the blade shape of the Kutmaster jack to the others. Seems a little sleeker and more stylish. The long nail nick on the Robby looks a little awkward. JMHO ;)
