What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Carbon steel blades with two different sizes and bellies, and beautiful dark sawcut bone. Like this one!

Barlow brothers. The 15 boys knife may not be a true barlow, but next to the Boker 492, it's just a brother from another mother... beautiful jigged bone on this example too. I'm very impressed with this knife. Will make a nice worry stone, as well as user.

Spear/Red Bone Charlow on its way so I'll no longer be Barlowless! Thanks, burnside!

Another thank you to Charlie who promptly replied to my inquiry!

Forgive my strange ideas, but what if there were to be a barlow with two blades, the master being a spear point, and the secondary being a scissor? I saw a post about a barlow wih a caplifter, and it got me thinking about SAK's. So why not a barlow with scissors? Does anyone else think that would work well?

No?

Okay, i'll see myself out now... :o

You are going to like this one. A perfect Charlow in every way. I'm sad to see it go, but I'm glad that it's going to someone fairly new to traditional pocket knives. For a newbie just getting into the traditionals, this red bone spearpoint charlow is going to be one heck of an introduction!

I'm late to this party, and a terrible photographer, but these two are in my pockets daily. I've never had better knives than these. Outstanding quality!

I'm not a total newb but I had never owned a Barlow. I started out with traditionals and SAKs growing up. I then went through a phase of modern folders but have since come full circle. At one time I had a decent sized collection of traditionals (mostly GEC, a couple Case and a couple customs) but found I didn't like the upkeep of having so many knives. (I also tend to use versus collect)

I currently own Canal Street Cannitler with reclaimed Chestnut/D2 steel , a couple GEC F&F Tools with orange delrin/O1 steel, SAK Cybertool 34, 2 SAK Minichamps (one is customized). The only others I have are blades on a couple leatherman multitools, a Spyderco Assist and a cheap Kershaw someone gave me.

This will be a user for me. Can't wait!

I'm sorry I labeled you as a newbie like I did. I was quick to jump the gun on that. My bad. No offense intended. I thought I read earlier that you were new to traditionals. In any case if this is your first Barlow, you are still in for a treat! :)

Your knife collecting history sounds very similar to mine. I'm working on trying to keep it at a minimum these days, but its hard. By minimum, I mean less than ten knives. I also only have traditionals and traditional locking knives at the moment. That's not to say I wouldn't pick up a spyderco again someday (although that is unlikely). SAKs are about as modern as I get these days with pocket knives.

cheers.

I very much agree

Just a pair of Sheepfoot Charlows

I was so fortunate to win Charlies Sheepfoot giveaway and I choose the "Gunstock Walnut". In addition to the Walnut I just had to order the African Blackwood as well. I love my Gabon Ebony Clip and Spear Charlows.

The two arrived last Saturday and I just haven't found enough time to post pictures of the two together.

So here they are---absolutely impressed with both

now your just rubbing it in!
i love that gunstock walnut sheepsfoot...
Darn these unreasonable bills and lack of $$!
jealous :D

You have to wonder, with Walnut being pretty much ubiquitious in the US, why not many many more knives with handles made of Walnut?

That's a good question. Living in an area that has a big logging industry history, I always lean toward native woods for handle materials. My recently acquired walnut Charlow fits into this perfectly for me!

Trying some photoshop stuff, sprung it on my TC Barlow, loving it too, very nice folder!

Maybe because it is ubiquitous - many people look for more exotic, or at least different materials to make something their own.

Thanks! it does add a little character to it, it's all good, what a great knife it is too!!!
While I am sorry I missed the clip point ones, this is pretty special :)
