What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Pulled this beauty out of the mail this afternoon... Wow what a looker!!! Another winner Charlie.

Thanks Paul!!! I have to say that I think I like it the most out of all the Charlows I've acquired so far. Something about those chestnut covers...

Beautiful Charlow....unfortunately, it now appears some twit pinched mine Saturday. After not receiving mine by Monday, I checked the tracking number, and saw that it says delivered, but I never saw it anywhere on my porch. Neighbors don't have it; I really hate it when someone goes scrumping on my plantation.

So did anyone besides me get(got but did not receive yet, thus no pics) the single blade in Gabon? I love ebony but you guys are making me second guess myself. SOMEONE put up a pic of their single blade ebony!

Check my photo on page 192. I did a different shot in last week's wooden wednesday thread too. Cheers

Give it one more day…I had a similar issue with a knife I purchased. It was showing delivered and nothing was in my mailbox…I left a note for my mail lady in case I wasn't home the following day. The next afternoon, my knife was in the mailbox and my mail lady gave me a BS response about how, "delivered" means delivered to the PO. I knew, and she knew, that she was lying through her teeth…she delivers packages for us many times a month. Long story short…they make mistakes that they rarely own up to, but I'm sure you'll get your Barlow.

In any case…a good traditional barlow will always have a story to tell!

Don't get irrational, like I almost did.
There were three Latino dry-wallers working on the house across from mine (and parked directly in front of my house, 25 feet from the gate) when my tracking showed my ZT0350 in M390 as delivered. The Postman had gotten in the habit of leaving packages on the top of my block wall, next to the gate. The next day, I contacted the Post Office and they assured me that it was, indeed, delivered. I had a sidearm in my car and on the way home that day, I fully intended to confront the three young men and ask them what they had done with my package, as soon as I drove up to my house. When I got home, they were nowhere to be found (unknown to me, they'd finished the job and had moved on to another). I contacted the seller and they sent another, immediately. It arrived two days later. Both days, I was ready and looking for the three supposed thieves when I got home (Thank God they didn't have to return for touch-ups).
Imagine my surprise, when the original package showed up in my mailbox on the third day. I contacted the seller and they e-mailed shipping labels to me, to insure a smooth return of the duplicate order by UPS. I was very impressed by the actions of the seller, very ashamed of my assumptions and thankful that I wasn't given the opportunity to go over the edge.
Give it some time to work itself out.

Holy moley! 3 (probably) honest men might have gotten hurt! Lotta responsibility owning a firearm!! I am impressed that you admit your assumptions were erroneous!
2 Latino carpenters who worked on my brother's house in Pasadena, were the most kind and honest men you would ever want to meet!!

Leave something on my fence, and it would be gone in 3-4 minutes. I have done it!!
Likely not official PO policy leaving your fine knives by the gate! But there are more important things over which to show armaments, IMO.
Back to knives!

After all that serious stuff, I thought a nice happy picture was in order. :)

Spears are great. I hope to acquire one of the latest run. But this was the first Barlow I ever carried. Until it came along, I did not know what all the fuss was about. I'm going to go get that clip blade now and put it in my pocket!

My thoughts too Charlie. Most people are not so self-aware and introspective as to admit when they are wrong, especially on a public forum.

I have had similar issues with USPS and delivery notifications. Pretty annoying, but when it gets delivered eventually (as it always has) I often chide myself for being so impatient and frivolous. Though it is hard when something like a $$$ GEC is floating in the proverbial postal ether.

67nick, I agree with the chestnut bone...the original sawcut Charlows were a great authentic run but something about the jigging combined with the long bolster really grabbed me. I might have to scrounge for a 2-blader like that just to go with the 1-blade that I could not resist picking up!

I can't seem to find it but it's the picture just above me, that long pull spear with the grainy wooden handle that Charlie has, it doesn't get better than that one.

long pull spear with the grainy ... handle

I think youre talking about Old Boily, aka Bullwinkle

I'm a firm believer in cider vinegar. I scrub the knife real good and dry it completely. I heat the vinegar in this skinny little glass I have, in a microwave, 'til it starts to bubble slightly. (don't boil it!). Insert knife. Leave until it is black, moving it slightly to move fresh acid to the metal.

The vinegar raised the grain on mine, making it ugly and uncomfortable. I will post a pic of it polished out!

Knife Abuse 101, this course is not Levine approved.
1. Soak in Alcohol
2. Boil in vinegar
3. Soak in mineral oil

I thought it was made that way. :p Well, putting the handle aside, the long pull spear with long swedge looks good.

I'll agree. I'm very pro 2A, but firearms deserve alot of respect. Purposely putting one's self in a position to shoot is never a good idea. Even shooting someone in self defense is a bad outcome. It might be one's best option, but you risk losing alot even if you are in the right.

Now me getting off the soapbox..... I'm having a hard time deciding on my next TC. I hope they aren't gone before I can figure it out. Really liking the Blood Red, Autumn..... but man, I'm kinda itching for another spey.... maybe the jack.

Woodrow the 2 blade Spey hasn't left my pocket since I got it. If you can find a saw cut brown I think you'll be in heaven.

Just traded this one to one of our own. This is such a beauty and I can't resist a goodbye pic:

It will be well taken care of dawgfan! I hope you enjoy that single spear, dressed in walnut, that is making its way to your neck of the woods!
