What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Both made in USA, both well built, both get the same job done, both have black wood handles, only one will fit in your pocket, I think I will carry the spey blade TC vs the Emasculator.

Welcome Jakes dad! Nice to see you here. And nice pic.

Nice knife, and nice tins!!
The next run of TC Barlows will be early in 2015, but they show up for sale from time to time, I understand.

Thanks for the heads up. I certainly could use the time between now and next year to save up and get my funds back in order.

Welcome to the Forum, Jake's Dad!!
And welcome to the world of TC Barlows.
I am always on the lookout for Spey Barlows, and that's why I asked GEC to produce yours!
Nice picture, if a little cringe-worthy!!

:D

Thanks Charlie, I'm looking forward to the next run and keeping an eye on the exchange, but you need to be quick of the mark.
Gordon.

I must say I LOVE my spey Charlow in AB... One of my all-time favorites:

And "the Precious" - this one is very special indeed and it is my Grail Barlow... a long-pull single spear in Gabon Ebony :)

I just got this eBay find in the mail today but its a brand I don't know anything about yet. Overall fit & finish, walk & talk are excellent. I would go as far as saying it gives my GEC knives a run for their money even. Really snaps open with authority & about a 7 on the pull scale. Would really like to know what the blade steel is.

She's a beauty Jake!!! "Old Cutler" was made by Colonial. I believe it was to be a step up in quality verses the Colonial offerings.

Nice, one, Jake. An interesting 'commemorative'-- a movie keepsake.

(Odd one, that, an American barlow as a souvenir for a British story/movie.)

I'm interested to hear what you or others determine.

(Perhaps the embellishments were added after the fact? But if so, why? By whom?)

That is a great Barlow- love it! That etching fits just perfectly on a Barlow Bolster!!! Awesome knife, I too am a lucky owner of that Brand - thanks to Pauls fantastic generosity - thank you my friend -, which also includes nearly all of below as well!!!

Thank you for the compliments & info on my new Barlow everybody! I'm really liking it. I still haven't been able to find any info on steel used. Any of you know the answer to that question??

This ticks all the boxes for me.Modified the blade to leave a cutting edge of 2&7/8 inch, fits in with U.K edc laws.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: a cracking example of how to tailor a knife to make it even more perfect (for our English carry use at least!).

Nice find, Jake! Colonial was geared to making inexpensive knives, but had the talent and skill to make good'uns!
I have tested for carbon vs. stainless by placing a toothpick drop of vinegar on the well-wiped back of the tang for 15-20 minutes. Easiest place to clean up without leaving a mark on the blade.

Paul has upped your antique Barlow quotient, Duncan! Good on both of yez!

Nice work B-dog! Northwoods produces some fine pocket cutlery!

Finally got around photographing one of my latest TCs with one of my first. Love the grain on this walnut!

Thanks Charlie. I've only been able to find an old post from somebody claiming the blade steel is 1090 Tool Steel. Can't say I've heard of that but maybe they just meant 1095 or something. :)
