What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Beautiful Duncan!!! and here I thought it was you punching me in the ribs to get at those? I could of swore that was you when I finally came to:p

Just a great group my friend and I have you to thank as you gifted me that fabulous single Spey "Day's Work" ;) Thank you Duncan:thumbup:

I like the 2nd and 3rd cut stag better than the figured stuff. I always thought it was like a quality rating, like a high school football team. But I like yours better.

I'm in the same boat. I don't consider myself a stag person but I do love the polished 3rd cut stag that GEC has been putting out. It appeals to me not just because I like how it looks & feels but also because it would normally be garbage. I hate wasting things lol.

My friend, I saw what was going on - as I was going down, Primble was the one working on your ribs, just as his foot found its mark on me- yup!

Those All in a days works are just great! - the Bone on this one Paul is magic!

...Whitetail that I used for the scales...

Markesharp, that is a beautiful knife! I always hoped Waynorth would commission a Barlow with stag covers just like these. But I know it doesn't make the list of traditional Barlow handle materials...and I am very pleased with this year's Forum Knife that sort of fills the same place in my collection. Still...a first cut stag Charlow... You did a great job. Although some would hate to see a Charlow desecrated, the result is super!

Well I guess that's what I get for getting a few days behind on reading this thread, looks like all the surprise Christmas Charlows are already spoken for but I will certainly look forward to seeing some pictures :)

Markesharp that's beautiful stag, and to be able to harvest it and then see the rewards of beautiful scales on your TC barlow; simply magnificent.

Duncan what a beautiful haul, all as beautiful as the next; but the Red Saw-Cut Spear Point with the long pull, gorgeous. :D

I know right. Here I was fondling and sweet talking my newly acquired clip rust red sawcut and he has to go post that spearpoint pic on the same day. What an inconsiderate jerk. 😑

I got a bit battered with Primble and Paul elbowing, Barging and kicking their way past me - Whew - talk about instant rabid behaviour, well I picked myself up, dusted myself off and quickly wiped my tears away before they could see and took what was left- their hands were full and they ran out hollering Banshee type of Victory cries......
Group shot......:D

Victory cries?? :eek::eek::rolleyes:

Don't look like to me like you got battered up too bad by Primble and Paul. Looks like to me that you made out like a bandit.:eek::grumpy:

Sneaky, sneaky, sneaky - thievery I say!!! :grumpy:

Nice bunch of knives there and nicely pictured - wonder what the neighbors thought about that bunch?:D

How on Earth are you able to not use that thing!?! I could never just collect knives. Believe me that's not a sly "I'm better than you." Clearly, you've already won. But seriously, there would a faded outline on my all my pockets in the shape of that knife right there.

So, where would be a good place to start to find a few nice, well made Barlow beauties? Some of the newer gec/tc I have seen and drooled over would simply look great on my shelf. My number one love for scale would be some nice symmetrical stag, after that maybe a simple cut bone slab.

I've been buying product (reference removed), but their Barlow selection is just a little slim. Any info would be appreciated. I'll try to add a pic of what I have when I'm allowed to post pics. Is my inability to attach pics related to my new account and low post count, or something else? I'll try again to just post the pic elsewhere, then point.

Every question you just asked can be answered with the forum's search field. I'll tell you this, they're made in very limited numbers and are hard to find. It takes time to find the ones you want on the secondary market. Especially the sawcut bone Barlows.

Also, just a heads up, this is a discussion forum and you will be quickly reprimanded for asking "where to buy" questions. Just put a little bit of effort into digging around on the forum, all of your questions have all been answered somewhere, in the past.

I use it. It, as well as most of my knives, get pocket time, however, only light use for all but one of my TC Barlows. I never cared for blade embellishments until I saw the TC Barlows and I like the blade embellishments on them a lot. I don't do anything with them to jeopardize that. Other than the Days Work below, only light duty for the remainder.

I have plenty of old knives with honest patina that I can stick in my pocket if I feel the need and many times I do have another when one of my beloved Charlows is in tow.

It is not like one can change their mind and go back to like new, once the embellishment is gone. Also - they are not easy to come by. I have spent a LOT of time on the forums and peaking under many rocks, so to speak, to find my TC Barlows. I remember that and I wish others would remember that. That knife above I spent months trying to buy and aggravated way too many people and when the opportunity finally did come along, I had to give up another precious and rare Charlow in a trade to get that antique amber.

When I was younger and did not have a lot of knives, I used the same knife daily and just took care of it. Times have changed and I now enjoy having a cherished knife in my pocket, nearly a different selection every day. My feelings on using my most cherished knives is: why on earth would I want to patina up my whole collection?

With that said, my advice to all knife lovers is use your knife how you want and enjoy them the way you like. ;):)

Of course man. Well said. My new Charlow doesn't have any of the Tom's Choice etch left, and it would be nice if it were there, but I'm sure you know all about having and eating your cake. I hear you, Charlie's etches are the first I've ever really liked as well. I was glad the Marlows didn't have etches, right into the pocket. Those turned out to be great heavy users.

That's a lovely user right there, btw.

I bought one of the Northfield 77 Barlows and remember thinking when I took it out of the tube - I don't need to worry about the blade etch on this knife. :)

Not meant to slight the model 15 design, which I continue to like the best. ;):)
