What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

What makes a good traditional Barlow? When you don't even know it's in your pocket, because you just put it there in the morning without thinking about it; and when you need it you can pull it out and be surprised and excited all over again like it's Christmas morning, because you've got a really cool traditional Barlow in your pocket! (Apologies to all my English teachers for that horrible sentence.)

After this photo, I cleaned it up. Today the blades look nice and clean, just good patina and well-oiled joints. :)

Those are some beauties there Lloyd! Hey, I was curious, out of the nine, which three were the ones in the white knuckle death grip in that photo? So classic! :D:thumbup:

Got back home and had this guy waiting for me.
Love the jigging and colour of the bone on this and the blades are nice and snappy.
Can see this becoming a fast favourite, the third boker barlow that has passed through my fingers and definitely the best of all three!!

Hey, I grabbed one of those, too!

But I much prefer the domed pins on the Saw Cut Saddle Brown...

So I got two!

Thanks Perry! As I recall you got a nice one at the show too.

Yeah very nice Somber! Your picture makes mine look anemic.

Sugarleaf dang that is so funny! I do look like a bird of prey with its talons wrapped around those three tubes. Charlie's expression is priceless like who does this bozo think he is clutching my TC folders here and is he going to pay me or what? I can't remember which three those were but my guess is (there was so many to choose from it was TC information overload starring all those end caps) it was a Single Spear Ebony, Walnut clip/pen and Yellow bone Spey. But I am not sure because although I look focused, calm and collected on the outside on the inside I was a wreck trying to determine how I could hold onto more tubes in one hand, search with the other hand and keeping others from squeezing in on my position all at the same time. I mean it is not easy work having this much fun! Ha Ha. Lloyd

Lol, you were hiding it well Lloyd. Great poker face, comes only with age,,,,and buying lots of guns!

Haha, that's hilarious! A quandry indeed. How to keep browsing for more barlows, without letting go of the ones you already have. Sort of like the monkey trap, how to get your hand out of the bottle without letting go of the nuts :D Well somehow you managed to figure out how to extract the nuts. Incredible haul my friend! Congrats and enjoy the fruits of your labor!:thumbup:

Looks like some collections multiplied, some in great numbers. I am happy to see the stash !:thumbup::D

Looks like all had a great time. I checked on a flight, but, got a case of sticker shock. :o

Well - my wallet thanked me for not going. :D

Thanks Sugarleaf! It was the high point of my knife collecting journey no doubt and probably like I said earlier never to be repeated again in my lifetime. I was lucky I don't know if or when Charlie will have this kind of older production TC show release ever again. Hopefully he will and others will be able to partake. I felt I had to go if I wanted to keep up with you my friend (grin). Lloyd

Me? If ya told me we were racing, then I would've made the three hour drive from my house. Good thing you didn't because your monkey paw would still be stuck in the bottle :D:D::cool:

Lol, it was a great and unexpected haul for us all. Sugarleaf, if I was only three hours away I would've been haulin it down the interstate for Eugene! Guess you had to work? As Lloyd said, who knows if we will ever see this much of the previous year runs at one time again.

The Yellows

Goodness Lloyd, all beauties and darn near impossible to find! At any price.

I actually had this one in my pocket today:

Luger's photo reminds me that I have the other two in their tubes and wax paper still. Time to get another one into the rotation and take a group photo! Time is a funny thing, Perry. I don't remember a lot of enthusiasm for the yellow bone when it debuted. I originally just bought the three yellows, but everyone else seemed obsessed with the sawcuts. Of course, there were not so many on the hunt for Charlows then, but I don't remember them flying off the shelves. I think the yellows may have been the last to sell out on that run. (Don't rely on my memory. YMMV.)

Well... If I had two, I suppose I wouldn't be carrying one around in that fancy Gunsmith Jack pocket slip, tryin' to keep it all purty and everything. My saddle brown is special too, looks kind of purplish in the right light.

+1. Time to save up for next year in Eugene! See you there, Primble!

I'm going to be giving one to my father this June, so I'll have to get some fancy slip like you, probably :D

You must like your dad! I hope my kids give me Charlows some day!!!

(Say, maybe I should just adopt somber...)

You couldn't have picked a better father :D

He also likes the Stew's Blade, though. If you were my dad (strictly hypothetically speaking -- I ain't signing no papers :D ), which would you rather receive, the Saddle Brown or this?
