What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Thanks Perry. Yeah Primble is a hard act to follow! I believe there was also a walnut TC Sheepfoot/Pen produced in 2013. Lloyd

Thanks for the comments guys. Lloyd - the walnut collection looks great !!:)

I have that walnut Sheepfoot with pen. It is a favorite and was my second TC Barlow purchase.

I was going to pass on the walnut. jon_slider said to buy the walnut. Barry had a sheep-pen gathering dust, unwanted, in his web store. So I gave in to temptation, heeded the advice of the wise one, and for the first (but not last) time, benefited from the services of one of our fine member-dealers.

And so I became the proud papa of a walnut sheep pen.

This old picture, taken with a pinhole camera made from birch bark, reminds me that it is time for a proper photo shoot.

Thanks Primble! Thanks Dr. for posting a picture of the Walnut SF/Pen. I will be looking for one to complete my Walnut TC collection--I know good luck with that. Lloyd

That is a nice quartet of Barlows Scott. Would love to see that birch bark pinhole light box.:thumbup::thumbup::D

Patience pays off Lloyd !!! ;):D:D:D

That it does Rob.

In my trade with Rob (my Palo Santo for the Chestnut Jigged Spearpoint/Pen), I found a little something extra. :D
A nice little Western Peanut that was re-handled in some nice deep ebony. Thank you so much Rob.

Farewell my friend, you have aged properly in your box for long enough, now it's time to go out in to the world!
Do not be afraid, you are well prepared, an excellent cutler saw to that!

Yeah I can't wait to get some of that patience thing you mention Primble:D Nice picture Bob of that spear/pen jigged bone TC. I have that same one with the single spear. Gorgeous TCs! Lloyd

Thanks Lloyd, nugun55, Primble, RDaneel, Dr Scott, Ed and any others I might have missed. I'm struggling a little to keep up... been racing the rain to get the hay cut/baled on the front 40 and a garden re-planted that was pretty much wiped out by the last rains/storms  . But had to get a quick Barlow fix! :)

That sure sounds like a lot of work Al. Glad you got your fix !! Everything here has been a race to beat the rain. ;):D

Where is that knife headed, Dave?? Nice one!!

I currently have my nose in a book detailing the history of Sheffield in the 18th century, which as one might imagine, has lots of fascinating information about the cutlery trade. Just came across this, which I thought might be of interest.

This photo was taken between 1900 and 1919. Broadbent House is on the right, and is still there, being the oldest-surviving brick-built house in the centre of Sheffield (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Bank_House). The other buildings are no longer there unfortunately, but could this be the spot where the very first Barlow knife was made?!

Just thought I'd post this as a teaser photograph ;) I'll try to write up my visit, yesterday, to Sheffield next week
