What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Just thought I'd post this as a teaser photograph ;) I'll try to write up my visit, yesterday, to Sheffield next week :thumbup:

Nice shot indeed, Jack. Good to see the building preserved!
Nice to imagine the ancestral home of the Barlow has been found!
Nicer than nice if it's true!!

Your a Funny guy Charlie!!!:D

Thanks Charlie, I do believe that the workshop of Obadiah Barlow, and later John Barlow was on that spot, that's supported by several accounts, as well as by the census records. Only the neighbouring building survives though, being the oldest brick-built house in the centre of Sheffield. When Campo Lane was narrower than it is today, the Barlows home and workshop came out at a right-angle. The present building dates to around 1920 I think. I'll post more pics in a separate post when I get a chance in the week my friend :thumbup:

Your Peimble Sir,

take the most fantastic photos. I wish I had you talent in addition to your collection. But since I have neither thank you for sharing them with me/us.

willydigger, if I could have any TC barlow (let's say from a fairy godmother), I'd go for one exactly like your antique amber sawcut 2-blade at 6:30-7 in your photo! :thumbup::thumbup: You have a splendid collection, but that's the one that makes it hard for me to breathe! :eek::D:D:eek:

Which makes that street to our left hallowed ground!!:eek:

I wonder if we can inlay a bronze star or some appropriate image??:confused:
Perhaps we could crowd-fund it??:rolleyes::D

At any rate I would dearly like to tread those cobbles!!
My wife retires soon - perhaps sooner than later!!

Looky what just came back from Evan's shop! I know it kinda goes against the idea of a traditional barlow, being a cheapie, hard-use knife. But this pre-ban ivory is delectable on a TC :D:cool:

Yes indeed, my friend :) While there have obviously been a lot of changes to the area since the days of the old Barlows, as my photos will hopefully give an impression, and as Duncan can perhaps attest, many of the old cobbled streets, that those eminent cutlers walked, still remain in place.

The local Council are scoundrels with little interest in the city's history, but I will look into the placement of a suitable marker at some point.

If there is ever the possibility to visit, the sooner the better Charlie :) :thumbup:
