What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Delectable for sure Al.

Beautiful knife Al:cool::thumbup:

Thanks Bob & Paul! Evan really knocked this one out of the park :thumbup:

In light of the ivory stunner(s), I shall attempt to restore balance by posting up perfection of a different sort-- a Perfect User:

Agreed Sarah, there's really no improving upon perfection. I normally prefer to keep my traditional knives unmodded in their original state and would never commission a re-cover job unless I had an original example of that knife. Hopefully Charlie looks at it as a tribute to his creations rather than make him cringe, LOL. Plus I look at a cover swap as the least offensive mod :D. I can tell you this, I saw an EO mod on a TC the other day, and a little piece of my soul died. I mean, I love an EO on a knife, but it just looked funny to me.

Thanks Charlie, I do believe that the workshop of Obadiah Barlow, and later John Barlow was on that spot, that's supported by several accounts, as well as by the census records. Only the neighbouring building survives though, being the oldest brick-built house in the centre of Sheffield. When Campo Lane was narrower than it is today, the Barlows home and workshop came out at a right-angle. The present building dates to around 1920 I think. I'll post more pics in a separate post when I get a chance in the week my friend

Great work Jack, Thanks for the history.

Fantastic collection of TC's willydigger

2009 BF Barlow for Church Carry for me today:

Beautiful BF Barlow, worthy of church carry.

Looky what just came back from Evan's shop! I know it kinda goes against the idea of a traditional barlow, being a cheapie, hard-use knife. But this pre-ban ivory is delectable on a TC :D:cool:

Nice Sarah!!! that wonderful gift looks very familiar:thumbup: I do believe if memory serves it had a run in with tar???:)

...I saw an EO mod on a TC the other day, and a little piece of my soul died...

This cracks me up! I hear you, brother! Preachin' to the choir! Each one of us has a line we won't cross, and your line is the EO mod! For some, that line is having a caplifter added. For others, it means always carrying in a pocket slip and oiling the blade daily!

I think that was the Boy's Knife version? But you're on the right track, and this one has seen its share of work and dunkin'. :D

One might forget the specifics of the various duress, but not the lasting impression of a well-made tool used as intended, rock-solid after being rode hard and [NOT] put away tarr'd. Or something like. ;)

Beautiful TC Caleb! Is that a third cut stag?
Perry

Yes, sir. Barry aka Gunstock Jack picked me out this beauty last year when they were hitting the market. I like how much variation there is in the 3rd cut. I was hoping for a lighter example myself, and I was very happy when this arrived. Too pretty to not throw in the pocket and use.

Amazing looking TC, great job by Evan.

Amazing looking Barlow now, Al! Evan did a FINE job!

Haha! To each his own I guess. As the saying goes, opinions are like... I'm certainly not going to tell someone what they should or shouldn't do with their own knife, or what they should or shouldn't like. ;)
