What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Duncan, Nice Kabar and great pics! I love it when you find one with the box and paperwork.

Thanks for the comments Augie and Chris on the Barlow :) -now would you believe that Mr. Paul Hilborn gifted me that complete boxed KaBar!:D
Again Paul many thanks.

Ron - Thank you for the photos of that LOVELY KNIFE - and it's very close cousin!!!!!

A little patina helps to resist rust, and looks nice. That knife has a "pocketed, but well-kept" look, Gus!

Camillus created many more nice knives than we will ever know, Ron!

Duncan has many more friends than we will ever know!!:D*

* 'cause he's such a great man!!:)

Charlie - thank you for the not-so-true words my friend :o, but I am lucky to know from a-far many wonderful people - I am extremely rich in that way.

Duncan--great to see that old Kabar with box and papers. What a story the photo and papers tell!

Ron--some great old Barlows-- love the handles and grinds.

wg--your TC is on the way to becoming a well-loved old Barlow. I love the milling on that redbone.

Charlie - You are absolutely correct on all 3 counts!

Thank you Robbw! :)

Absolutely lovely Ron

Jack - Thank you! :)

I acquired a couple of Barlows this past weekend, but they both need extensive cleaning before I post pictures. I'm hoping that someone here can help me with information on both.

1. O.N.B. BARLOW - I know it was likely made by A Kastor in Germany c.1910, but I haven't found a definitive explanation one what the "O.N.B." stands for.

2. Imperial Barlow Prov R.I. with a Diamond Edge stamp on the mark side bolster, Barlow on the pile side - I know the tang stamp was used by Imperial from 1956 to 1988 based on images I've seen of Imperial tang stamps, but I don't know when Imperial used the Diamond Edge stamp on the bolster.

Any help would be appreciated. I'll post pictures once I get a chance to knock the grime off.

what makes a good traditional Barlow? ...

One gifted with Love.

I will be carrying this one every day and reveling in the patina and coloring of the bone as it ages with use.

Mark had a tall order on his hands for this one. My instructions:

1. Do not let that belt sander touch the patina on my bolsters. :grumpy:

2. Take it apart and discard the broken pen and lightly clean the parts without messing with patina. :grumpy:

3. Hide the pivot pin without hurting the bolster patina as much as possible. :grumpy:

4. Only use carbon steel pins and not big ones neither ! :grumpy:

5. Put Ebony wood and leave above bolsters and I will take them down and bevel the corners to the bolster. :grumpy:

6. Do not let that belt sander or sandpaper touch the patina on my bolsters. :grumpy: :D:D

7. DO not break my original bone handles and send them back to me with the knife and be sure to pay for Priority mail. :grumpy:

8. If you mess it up, leave the country. :grumpy:

9. DO NOT send bill. :grumpy:

Since I am so much less bossy:D than Primble, I sent my KA-BAR Dog's Head Coppersmith to our friend Mark with merely one request: lighten this baby up by removing the pen blade. The results - perfection. Thank you Mark!! Rainy here today, but I had to get a photo posted, the copper collection:

"C" is a keeper, Lemmy!!;)
Nice little message for you - every day!!

Nice doghead, Brad!

Beautiful Ka-Bar and splendid conversion/modification by Mark! I like all those copper accessories. Lloyd
