What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

A Sawcut Redbone Spear that you pried out of Primble's hands! He got so tired of me bugging him for it everytime we talked, he finally caved in and sent it to me. :D

Roberto Thank you my friend!

Can't believe how far I've got behind with this thread :o

Here's the Barlow I had with me yesterday :) I sat in the very spot in The Fat Cat pub, where Duncan gave me the knife at our meeting in Sheffield a couple of years back :)

Great TC and even greater generosity from our good friend Duncan !!!:thumbup::)

Wow Mark!!!

Is Sir Primble feeling ok?

An absolute beauty Mark!!! I know you've been looking for one for sometime know...happy for you:thumbup:

and now the rest of the story ! ;)

I had for a long time explained to Marko that I had one of each of all of the TC long pull spearpoints and to give one of them up meant that my collection would be incomplete. It always seemed to go in one of his ears and out the other, as he ALWAYS would up our telephone calls with "Send me that red sawcut TC spearpoint and I would usually reply "Just keep watching your mail", knowing full well that knife would not be going to Jackson. It never stopped him ! He was relentless !

Fast forward to about a week ago and Mark had told me he was going to sell a collection of old knives and I offered to help, after I was sure he was not going to keep them. After he had nearly depleted my bank account for them old knives, he dangled some more in front of me and some old knife boxes and my knees were getting weak. I offered him the red spearpoint in a trade for a few knives and those boxes I wanted and he quickly shouted "Done !!!"

After I had some knives all boxed up and ready to mail to him, he called me back and tried to change it to a Copperhead spearpoint !!:eek::thumbdn::grumpy::o:p

So now he is eating steaks for dinner while I am back to eating Ramen noodles again. :o At least I have some pretty nice old knives to show for it. :o

Nice pic of the knife Marko ! ;)

:D:D:D

Tim - looking good - a great TC, that Antique Amber !:)

Aaaaaah- so that's Primbs side of things- Mark- your version Sir so the jury can make their decision?

I FOUND MY ANCIENT BARLOW!!!

HOORAY!!! :)

I came across a new (to me) old word for scratched/scratted/diamonded bone the other day - Forbuck! I actually have one of the same 19th century table forks given as an example too :)

Found this old ad online which says it is "Authentic in every detail" ....but they then go on to say it has plastic scales, nickel silver bolsters, stainless blades and brass rivets :) So just about every piece was NOT authentic in the least lol

I'm happy for you Philllll!

Jack, tell us more about FORBUCK!!

This thread is the one I love the most along with the old knives thread, and the reason is the great knives that are posted here. The TC's have the charm of the old knives thanks to charlie and that what makes them so magical. After long time without a TC in my pocket I finally got one. I almost forgot how great they are.

I'm wanting to say these were made by Schrade.

I FOUND MY ANCIENT BARLOW!!!

(or rather, my wife found it, in the couch cushions)

As great as it is to see a TC reunited with its anxious owner, I imagine you owe the wife a whole heap of favors now. :D Glad to see it return to the fold!

And yet for some of the prices this knife has sold for (not all of 'em could be fraud, right?) you'd think the scales were authentic old Remington bone, the bolsters were iron and the liners made of 24k gold...

I'd like to get my hands on one, "inaccurate" reproduction or not, but this is not a hundred-dollar knife.
