What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Well loved barlow at the beach

A beloved Barlow to be sure! What scales are those - I can't tell in the pic. What sort of exposure or use has raised the grain to that extent may I ask?

I love worn, well used knives

Thank you!

It was already well used when I got ahold of it. The scales are ebony. I suspect it got left in a pocket and took a trip through the washing machine, because it has some serious pitting on the back of the blade.

I had this one for a post in another thread this morning. It is only fitting that it should put Charlie's thread back on page one. :)

Too right Ron, and that's a lovely way to do it my friend

My two current EDC Barlow's Neither is a TC but hopefully I will have one someday. Top is a Kutmaster that I put reindeer stag on and bottom of course is a John Russell.

Paul....sorry to hear about your loss. Buddy boy will be waiting on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge for you someday!!

Sorry about your Buddy, Paul!
They are members of our families after all!
I am sure he had a wonderful life with you all!

I am sad for you tonight Paul !!! I know that you did what you had to do and it is not easy ! That will be a very special knife now !!!

Harry

I'm so sorry to hear so Paul, I'm glad Buddy is without pain now though and hope you're doing alright. Best~

Thank you Ron, GT, SadSappySucker and Al--your kind comments are much appreciated!

Paul sorry for your loss. It is hard to let go and say goodbye to man's best friend! Think of the priceless memories you are made the beneficiaries of because your paths crossed.

All the best,

Lloyd

I'm so very sorry, Paul. And I understand the pain. I lost my Scout in November, and it still hurts. So much so in fact I've retired as a dog trainer. The inspiration he brought me landed my only TC Barlow in my hands. That knife is very special as I know I would not have it were it not for him. I know they'll be waiting for us someday.

Buddy's heart is smiling on you, Paul

TC's are just so so beautiful, but Charlie Sir I am sorry because dogs are just so much more.......

So sorry for your loss Paul. We have many furry and feathered friends here, when one is lost it can be heart breaking.

Paul....sorry to hear about your loss. Buddy boy will be waiting on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge for you someday!!

Thank you ALL, for your very kind comments/condolences. It is VERY MUCH APPRECIATED:thumbup:

My most cherished/favorite knife...

Don't know if I posted this one, a Wolfertz, with a spear main and pen secondary. Just a solid, honest knife!

Your 494 serves as a reminder, Ben: Has anybody ever seen a Boker 494 sheepsfoot+pen Barlow with jigged bone instead of sawcut? Most every one I've seen has been sawcut bone or Delrin, depending on age, but I finally managed to swing a 494 for a reasonable price, and I'm starting to wonder if the jigged bone "variant" I received isn't a rehandle. It looks right, and I can find no evidence of any repinning, but neither can I find any evidence that Boker ever made "standard" 494s in jigged bone. Furthermore, the curve of the sheepsfoot blade on mine (which is stamped "494" on the tang, but nothing else, like so many other Bokers) seems to be a tad bit more rounded than pretty much every one I've seen before it, all of which have displayed those classical straight-curve-straight lines. There is no indication that the blade was reground or that it has anything but the factory edge on it (needs to be put to stone, but I want to settle my questions first).

I'll take a photo later for comparison, but my suspicion is acute regarding this knife. It's nice, solid, and for the most part resembles every other Boker-made Barlow I have, but this one has me scratching my head a bit.

Every jigged bone boker barlow I have seen or owned has been or fairly recent production with one of the solingen tang stamps.

Please post a picture when you have a chance.
