What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Great pic, Tim!

Thanks Phil, it's an older photo, here's one from today. Frigid Fridays on the East Coast call for my favourite in sawcut.
I just saw a photo of your 2 blade sheepsfoot with mammoth ivory it looks like? Whoever did the recovering on that one did a fantastic job with the pins.
edit:: (A friend just told me Evan modified that one)

Your 494 serves as a reminder, Ben: Has anybody ever seen a Boker 494 sheepsfoot+pen Barlow with jigged bone instead of sawcut?

...I'll take a photo later for comparison, but my suspicion is acute regarding this knife. It's nice, solid, and for the most part resembles every other Boker-made Barlow I have, but this one has me scratching my head a bit.

I just read your mention of this knife in another thread. Yes, please do post pictures. I am not familiar with the sheepsfoot version(s), but you've now seen my jigged-bone Boker Barlow, in Grand Canyon Bone. Here it is again:

Here's Old Hunter's:

And, as a point of reference, here is another knife in Boker's "Grand Canyon" series, pmew's congress:

Bokers, all.

Mine has

Boker
Solingen
Germany
Stainless

on the front of the clip blade main's tang (which is interesting, because most of the knives in the series are carbon, not stainless), with no markings on the pen blade. The silver box is labeled

493 GRC

Hope this helps. :)

Thanks for passing along all of the background, my collection is a little lean on Bokers of any vintage and your posts have been helpful more than once. I was really excited when you posted the bone Boker earlier, researched what I could but ended up getting swamped at work. When I got home I started poking around but I am really not much closer to an answer on this particular one. I resigned myself to being happy that I finally got any 494, and I just dig the way this one looks.

Great looking Boker there and nice to see something other than the ubiquitous TC Barlow.

:D I know the feeling and sympathize but I also know when the #77 hits and I finally get to have my very own I'll be participating in the newest and bestest barrage of GEC Barlow show'n & tell'n, so buckle up.

Some more Bokers for you, to help with karmic balance. :p

Here's one that for all I know was built by Boker as well, a daddy Barlow that hasn't escaped my CE&CF at all since I got it.

(If there's something heinously untraditional about such a beast then I'll edit it out, I'm sure Jack or Charlie will be able to explain my folly if necessary. :o)

Nothing against the TC Barlows which are nice knives, but it seems they appear in three or more out of every four posts here and likewise appear regularly in other threads. I appreciate the karmic balance. Those are some nice looking knives my friend.

Harry -:D I can see you have a little head start on your 77 Red Bone patina. I will try to post some catch up photos next week!:thumbup:

Nice Charlie Very Nice! Wow, those are some outstanding non TC Barlow examples. The Barlow Universe is now in harmony. Thanks, Lloyd
