What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Came across this Robeson recently. A bit smaller than GEC's 15...makes me excited for the 14s!

Q) What makes a good, traditional Barlow?

A) A thick slab of bone that just calls out to you regardless of nation of origin, brand name or value.

The first in a series of "tour of the Far East" Barlows.

A Japanese Roho brand J-206 large Barlow with the fattest bone handles I've ever seen. The knife is ¾" thick over most of its length -- for a single-blade knife.

That would have to be one of the better Vintage Japanese Foldets I have seen in a while of that styling.

It sure did turn out to be pretty. I have one coming that might be its match, though. I'll get some photos once I have it on hand.

I once had a ROMO Marauder Bowie. Wonder if the Roho might be a Romo.

You know what, on second inspection it appears that is "ROMO" after all. Explains why I had no luck finding information about the maker/importer earlier. :)

The antique amber sawcut single clip is my absolute favourite user TC, so much so..I had to find another one.
Also picked up this incredibly vibrant antique yellow sheepsfoot along the way that BigBiscuit helped me with stabilising a plumber's bum..crack :x

Two beautiful those clips, Tim!

Incredible Barlows, Lloyd! The two with the unstamped bolsters are breathtaking. I love that deep coloring of the smoother one and the jigged bone on the top one is really unique. How I still don't have an older Schrade in my Barlow collection is beyond me.

(Come to think of it, it's probably because you, Charlie, Primble and Atiger have them all! :grumpy: ;))

Tim, one Clip is a treasure to own but two!!! Great score on the pair my friend as well as the plumber sawcut:D:thumbup::thumbup:

Lloyd, a fantastic trio you have there:cool:

Atiger, wonderful Camillus:)

Got a CC from the 90's.
Diffrent light brought different colors out of the handle,
first one is how it looks most of the time.

On the sunny side..

These were built like tanks, nice one nifebrite

Here's similar

Mike

Thanks Mike. Looking good! Handle covers seem similar, one more pen on yours.
You are right, bolsters are quite heavy and the cutting edge feels, in spite of the swedge,
quite thick for a pocket knife. But it's a pleasure to use..:)

A CASE from 1980. I love the bone handles! The pen immediately snapped my thumbnail right off when trying to open it. I will never learn with these old CASE knives.

Case Barlows don't mess around. I don't think any of mine have a pull under a 6 on any blade, and my two Appaloosa Barlows ('79 and '82) are both 8 or better on the pen. They sure are purdy, though.
