What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

GEC is now ahead of schedule, and the LICK CREEK Barlows are in assembly!!
Took me by surprise - I am scrambling to write an intro-rant for the back label!!
We might see a finished example by tomorrow!!!!!!

My offspring used to say OMG! I don't know what they say now!

I 'need' one of these! I hope I can buy one! Then I'll finally be able to post a pic in this thread.

Would someone mind filling me in on these? They say made in 2016, wondering if these already came out or if they are still available? Sorry I haven't seen them before with these covers with the spear point. Thanks in advance.

They are making them right now, preorders are already all spoken for. You will have to try dealers that post them online when the receive them and hope your faster than the next guy.

This makes me very sad! I've been keeping an eye out but never saw anything about the preorders :(

Yeah I hear you SA Condor I found out the hard way about keeping an eye out earlier this year. When it comes to a GEC knife you really want you had better keep more then just an eye out. You need at least both eye's a bit of your time each day /Google and a telephone just to start with. Then a bit of luck dont hurt ether. :D

Got a purchasing question?
Ask someone using VM, PM, or email.
Contact a vendor. We got several GEC dealers who regularly post in this thread and in other GEC threads.

Please, do not discuss purchasing issues in the knife discussion forums.

This is not 100% true.

Does anyone have a good guess of what the different bone colors for these will look like?

Great shot of those twin beauties, Tim! Looks like you put a garbage disposal quarter in the photo.

Haha it was a quarter my brother found and gave to me. He knows I'm into coins and while this one holds no more worth than 25cents..maybe less now ;) He thought it a nice gift. Thanks :)

Barlow events are unfolding very rapidly at GEC!
I just finished etch and label work, and Sue sent me some pictures of some near-finished knives! As it happens, this was my breakfast this morning!!

And this is how the Dark Red Sawcut bone is turning out!!

I think we have to change the name to Black Cherry!
What a luscious color for a knife handle - and high in anti-oxidants to keep you young!!:D

:) I only said that because a friend of my son's dropped one into our garbage disposal (many years ago) and that's what it looked like. It is a nice gift and sets off your twin knives well. (oh, and it looks like silver so it's probably worth $3).

Back to your sawcut clips, do they also have matching patina?

Oh my; I cannot wait to get one of these in hand!

I'm having some trouble looking up stats on the GEC site. Can anyone tell me how big these will be compared to #15 barlows? And what covers they will come with as options?

Thank you, I'm kinda sad now I didn't know about these. Also, can anyone list a couple vendors that I might be able to contact here? I'm guessing theres no chance of landing one now, but I can wait and hope for some on the exchange I suppose. Thanks again.

Size and concept drawing from GEC's website. 15s are 3.5 inches

Production schedule showing handles and all the SFOs including the Lick Creek barlows, again from the GEC website.

PM incoming on vendors. Not appropriate to talk about that here.

3.07", IIRC.

I measured an old Barlow and converted fractional inches to decimal, finding that it was almost identical to the forthcoming #14 Barlow. Hope this helps a little:

Here's an older photo with extra-garbage lighting featuring the same Barlow. I don't have a TC (and at this rate I never will :grumpy:) but this should show the size difference between the old Furness and more contemporary standard Barlows.

Early on, pretty much all "standard" Barlows were the size of the Furness (and the upcoming #14) or thereabouts. This is why I continue to hassle Charlie about scratted Ancient #14s. :D
