What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Stunning bone on those old DE Barlows Tiger

I am not too sure how Bob let this one go - and then GIFT this KutMaster to me....but Oh man......

Fantastic Barlow Duncan, and a great act of generosity from Bob :) :)

Beautiful Barlow Duncan! Bob what a nice guy you are!! I love those gorgeous honey colored saw cut bone handles. Lloyd

Duncan, I know exactly how he was able to do it! ;) That is the kind of man our friend Bob is. :D

An exceptional Barlow, from one good man to another good man. Makes me proud to call you both Friend!

I didn't mention how gorgeous this Barlow is in the other thread, Duncan. The bone is perfection and the spear is a unique shape; add the Coca Cola bolsters and you have a treasure.

And it is a gift from Bob!:thumbup:

Latest old one to add to the Barlow thread, EF&S, maybe mid 1800's.

John - That is an amazing group shot of your Furness Family reunion! Quite impressive indeed my friend! :D I have this '82 Case SS Spear posted on other threads today. These are different pictures. I recently took a chance on this one from the big auction site at a very reasonable price. I could not have been more pleased with the Stag!!! :D

Thank you Ron, hard to go wrong with a Case Barlow, they are great Barlow's and yours has very nice matched stag, congrats!

Nice Case Ron! One of the nicest variations Case has done in more modern times!!

Great Furness group John!! :)
Makes me want to post some Barlow Groups - IF photobucket ever gets their act together!! Sheesh!!:grumpy:

I'm surprised to see all these old Barlows with spear (or drop point?) blades. I just assumed a clip type blade was most popular. This is my favorite type of blade on a traditional. Is it just these makers, or was this the most common type of blade shape?

Looking for a GEC 15 TC Barlow single spear

Thank you all, comments are much appreciated.

Ecallahan, from what I have seen the majority of the mid 1800's to early 1900's are spears. Charlie has several old ones in his collection that have unusual blade shapes which as far as I know is where the ancient TC came from.

That is beautiful! My wife is decidedly NOT a knife person. She can't understand my fascination with them. But if there was one knife I might be able to get her to carry, it'd be this Barlow. She's a Coke fiend from way back (the beverage, not the Peruvian marching powder).

Fantastic photo, John! I have really enjoyed seeing and reading about your Furness Barlows. Really opening my eyes to the diversity in the Barlow world.

I have a question. Do you have a special way of displaying your Barlow collection? Thanks.

Thank you Dean, right now I don't but I am in the process of modifying a couple old large printers trays that I will hang on the wall to put the Barlows in.

Photobucket is finally back up and running - smoothly - at least from here!!
I am reorganizing, so used this opportunity to scan this array of Scrade Cut Co Barlows. One is marked D<>E, and one was made by Utica (can you pick it out??). A couple are marked S.C.C.

Various handles are represented. There is a rare spey blade in there, and a few Sheepfoot blades, and the usual clips and spears. 4-5 of them have salesman's ink on them.
Hope you like them!!
