I can't tell if its just the excellent photos, or if ebony wood really looks that classy in person. Love it!

Hey 556hunter.....hope all is well man. Haven't seen that 76 stuck in the tree picture in a long time. Hope all is well! If you see this, post some pics of the patina contest stag 73!!!

As I was picking out a knife today, I realised I hadn't carried my Texas Jack in a while. It was overdue for a ride in the pocket.

Love seeing the STJs. Thinking i'll pull mine out tomorrow.

Please make sure you post these beauts in the Texas Jack Thread. Need to show that Cult of the Popcorn, or cashew knife thread who's in charge.

Jim

That is a fine fixed blade Gary. You already know I like the Ohta. ;):)

Thanks Primble. The Lightfoot is a pretty rugged knife. I like to have it along with me in the woods.

You know I love that Humphrey!

Today I am totin' my Case Amber Jigged Bone Medium Stockman CV. I got bored last night and decided to try my hand at forcing a patina. Turned out ok I guess. Not as smooth and uniform as I was hoping for but, Hey, I wont complain.

MG_1976.jpg

Another brother from another mother! We've got this block on lock!

What did you use for your patina, if I may ask? It looks like a nice base was created, you may be able to work with it further. Ask some of the chemistry whizzes around the porch here.

Indeed TsarBomba the product of just food and daily chores. Really handy in the 3 5/8's size. I'm trying to imagine one at 4" closed. Your stockman is really nice, I like how white and vibrant that bone is highlighted.

Thanks, I almost ended up not getting it, but fortune favors the bold and I even managed to swing a nice discount. It turned out to have amazing scales and finish; in the sunlight, it pops so much that it puts my elegant yet understated amber bone mini copperhead to shame! The heft feels like stability embodied in the pocket, it can double as a back pocket knife which allows an assortment of other knives to ride on my hip, and as a stockman it still has blades for real detailed work. I think with the CV blades it may have just become my #1 for the foreseeable future -- giving some of my stainless Barlows or trappers a breather for 2016, perhaps. After seeing some photos in other threads today I think I may have to feed the master blade a whole lot of apples this year. :D

(Case, will you consider making a folding apple-corer with CV and this handsome bone? :p)

TsarBomba, I put each blade into an overly ripe naval orange for 20 minutes and then into a granny smith apple for another 20 minutes. Pulled them out and washed them with hot water and soap and then lightly coated them with oil.

Then the secret must be: Fuji apples. :D:D:D

Haha could be. I'd give it a shot. I used the granny smith because they have more acid in them than a standard apple. That is what makes them so darned sour and best used for baking.

I was going to expand in the last post but I lost the URL temporarily so I'll say it here. Apparently the real secret when it comes to cutting the apples is that you have to do it organically over a span of months or years for the patina to come in deep and vibrant, per Jack:

Or, you could go with Comeuppance's method: cheap mustard.

Courtesy of $1 Big Lots mustard.

 I might just try this on one of my stockie's blades. :p

Hmm...time for a patina-in-progress thread? :D

The mustard patina looks good. I'm going to try boiling vinegar on my next CV knife. The ones I've seen come out fantastic and if you'd like you can also go as far as to make the blade so dark it looks black then just strop the edge and have a custom looking job. The one below was done with cider vinegar.

 You, sir, are a legend. Thank you for the information. While I don't think the pitch black will work on my current stockie, I can think of a whole bunch of ways to get into some dickens using that method. :D

I almost wonder what might result if I try 3 separate methods on all 3 blades. Oh well, first to get through the work week, then we can worry about patina during the down time. And I'm sure they'll like us to move out of the 'carry' thread, so if I get any results I'll be sure to make a proper thread. Thanks again, Robert!

Great stuff Randy, I regularly feel guilty about not carrying my Texas Jack more :o

Classy Gary, as always

Beautiful Catt Mr P (and that Humphrey is certainly none too shabby!)

Thanks Jack, wishing you a warm, dry new year.

Thank you my friend

Carrying my new-to-me Boker Trapper again today :) Have a great Friday everyone, and an even better weekend

You're welcome, Tom. :) That scout looks MUCH better in your pic than in mine!

Thanks GT :D Nice choices my friend

Thanks, Jack; warm memories connected to each of the knives I posted.

Your TC photos are always superb, Gus, but this one REALLY grabbed me!

Real nice texture that gets smoother with age and use. :)

Very nice, Ken! You should consider posting your twin Eric's Jacks in the "notable pairs" thread!

Absolutely gorgeous and clean Kingston, GT. That spey blade is no joke and the whole rig is so easy on the eyes. I recently picked up a Cornwall Knife Co. (supposedly a Camillus imprint?) stockman with an awl in place of the sheepsfoot and now I'm hooked on that blade configuration. :p
...
As for me, a trio of Ka-bars komprises my karry krew today:

...
Thanks, TsarBomba. :) Cool collection of Kabars!

I'm toting around my latest mail call to day to show it off at work with a few other knife collectors. I owe it to another member here from Blade Forums. Thanks to Tom Chase!

Jamie
Congrats, Jamie; does that one complete your set? That Imperial bag is groovy! :D

...
Carrying this wonderful gift in my front right pocket (the Prez is in the back left as usual).

Congrats on that glowing appaloosa Case, Dean! Kudos to Paul H for another of his thoughtful gifts!

...
Thank you GT,I carry it less these days since it's a prized posession but when it does come out I loveusing it.
Your lineups always seem to cover all the bases~
...
Thanks, Tim. :) Terrific Texas Jack!

Gary - I believe this 72 has the best Ebony of any knife I own. :D Nice Dogleg Jack

In anticipation of things to come ;) this is in the pocket today :D

Thanks, Ron. What's the meaning of the highlighted statement? You're just full of intrigue! Is that a Hayin' Helper? VERY appealing knife!

+5K!

I've got a Taylor-Schrade 44OT Workmate in my watch pocket this week; 4 different blade shapes (Wharncliffe on the bottom in the pic) in a single package!
