What "Traditional Knife" are ya totin' today?

How are you liking the A. Wright & Son Barlow? Been eyeing those closely lately :) I almost ordered one the other day, but an Ettrick and 2 Bolster Lambfoot ended up in the cart instead... Maybe next time.

A quickie review would be in order:

Pros: Sharp as the dickens out of the packaging. Wonderful carbon steel and as-ground finish. Surprisingly nice and ergonomic rosewood handles. Slightly longer than your traditional "old Barlow" for those of us with big hands. Strong pull. The "bowie" curve of the clip is excellent for in-close detail work. Price is nearly unbeatable for a new wood-handled Barlow with adequate F&F. And, it's a Wright & Son.

Cons: Not quite as refined as your typical new-look Barlow. Strong pull (I include this as a "pro" and a "con" because some people hate it and some people love it). Also a bit "gritty" until you get a few drops of Liquid Bearings or something similar into the pivot. Aesthetically, not really a "classic Barlow" so much as a single-blade jack with a slightly longer bolster.

All in all, for a knife I included as an afterthought to help ease the per-knife shipping hit on the lambsfoot I set out to order, I am thoroughly pleased to have it as part of my Barlow family.

Did you receive the Ettrick yet? What do you think so far, if so?

Carrying this one today. Edge needs some work near the tip (used it to opened a package this morning and it left a little to be desired; seems like the angle from the factory is a bit obtuse at the tip - probably because it's a little thicker behind the edge there - nothing a little sharpening time can't remedy. :D)

^^ Thanks Tsar. I haven't got it yet, and it might be a while, as our postal service is set to strike tomorrow. I am looking forward to it though.

Grrr.... Photobucket has no been letting me upload pictures so I'm attempting to do it via google image for the first time...

Photobucket is definitely getting worse Paul, I'm getting a lot of pop-up spam.

I bit the bullet and pay $10 per year to photobucket for an account. I decided it was worth that much to me to have an easy place to store the photos I use on this site. All the spam and slow response time problems immediately went away, and I didn't have to upload all the pics I have on photobucket to another site.

Meanwhile, have this Taylor-Schrade 93OT Wrangler in my pocket at the moment. Might switch to something else later in the day.

Nice Old Timer Frank! Another benefit of the paid Photobucket account is that it also carries over to the mobile app, getting rid of the horrible ads there too :)

I know I've been spamming my new #14 around a bit today but I'm actually toting both it and a new-to-me Beer Scout! Both of these were sort of grail-status acquisitions for me and I'm very excited to have them. Smooth bone is just so nice looking.

This guy again today

Great looking bone on those handles.

Those two look good together :)

Thanks, Jack. Raggy is becoming an EDC.

Great photo, Jack! The Joseph Allen looks like a knife that was carried, used and cared for.

Great sawcut 25, Paul!

Ok, enough nerd stuff. Back to knife geeking. 2 weeks of 2 Barlows, day 5:

:thumbup: for two more great Barlows (that IXL is so nice)! I look forward to these each day!

Peerless pair of Twin Charmers, Dean!

A couple of knives I've been using in the kitchen this week are a Rough Rider "work knife" and an Opinel #8 Garden Knife I recently got. Both are wondrous, wicked slicers that are very welcome on my cutting board!!

Thanks, Gary. That work knife (sodbuster) looks like a handy and handsome helper.

This morning I had "Raggy" with me on my walk/run. Just as I snapped this photo, the skies let loose with a horrendous downpour with thunder and lightning accompaniment! I tried to call my wife to pick me up as I was a couple miles from home - to no avail. So, I took off running. Halfway back and I realized I had left Raggy in the tree. I turned around in the rain to go get it. Bottom line, I arrived home very tired, totally drenched, but Raggy was dry and content in a pocket.

Later, I changed over to these two for the rest of the day.

The Beer Scout is an awesome knife, I am jealous.

Thank you, Dean! The IXL is rapidly becoming one of my favorite Barlows and I've had it less than two months. I only hope I can keep up the quality of the 2-fer-2 theme through the end; at some point next week I think I might have to go synthetic with handle materials (really hoping the Wiss arrives by that point), but I've still got a couple bony tricks left up my sleeve. :D

That spearpoint IXL of yours is no slouch at all, what a looker! I have a real affinity for those "rustic" big-shouldered bone slabs. I think we get so used to the dead-flush bolster-handle seams on modern traditionals that sometimes we forget how the knives used to be made, and for whom they were intended.

Thanks Tom, I think that is one of my favourite combinations you're carrying today :)

Thanks Jack! Don't think I have carried those two together before.

Tom
The beer scout goes so well with that Bark River!

Thanks Gev! Smashing knife today, the background is great as Cannonball noted, I didn't notice it at first :)

Yowza, what a pair, Tom!:thumbup: In the current thread about (tactical) knives as weapons, there's at least a subset of folks whose consensus is that "instruments of blunt force" are more effective (defensive) weapons than are knives. Your photo "hit me like a ton of bricks"!

Glad "Raggy" was not lost and it back safe in your pocket. Lightning can't make us quickly forget things!

Great picture of two treasures, Cannon:eek::thumbup:

Much appreciated, Tom! I have a picture of the snake that I did not notice at my feet as I was taking that pic...harmless...but got the ole adrenaline pumping for a sec. I still remember it as if it was yesterday. I might be able to find the pic.

Good to read your impressions TB. I think you are right about the Barlow. I know Wrights have had some QC issues in the past, but they seem to be on a roll if all my recent acquisitions are anything to go by. It's nice to see them doing so well, they produce a traditional Sheffield-made knife at a pretty fair price I think, and they are to all extents and purposes hand-made - just a handful of Sheffield cutlers in a workshop twice the size of my kitchen, knocking them together the old-fashioned way

Great-looking Barlows gents

Very striking

Thanks for that very useful feedback Frank, $10 sounds like a very worthwhile investment

Lovely :)

Both interesting and stylish

LOL! :D

Thanks Dean, it was a gift from ADEE, he had to do some work on the point, but it's a very nice knife in my opinion, as well as a piece of history :)

Two smashing Barlows my friend

Thanks Jack! Don't think I have carried those two together before.

Have you not?! :D Well they sure look good Tom! :D :)

Happy Canada Day!!

Great knives everyone!

Thanks for the comment Gary.

Very nice Ron, Glennbad and Tsar.

For Canada Day, it's a Grohmann a Richards Mountie Knife and an appropriate Vic Classic.

Have a good one all!

The ebony on that Grohmann is stunning. We've seen some real nice dark wood come through this thread lately.

I can't believe I forgot Canada Day. Enjoy the celebrations of Canada's birth!

Nice looking Grohmann, Ken. And who wouldn't want a Canadian Classic?
