What "Traditional Knife" are ya totin' today?

Totin this one today, doing some yard work before the 108 degrees coming up. Still can't quite believe that forecast in the Portland OR area!!

That Scagel is beautiful! What a knife!

SVT, could you post another pic of that whittler and maybe a little info? Thanks.

It is, it is... :)

Here ya go. It's a reuse photo but best I can do for 6-8 weeks. Case/Bose collaboration in chestnut jigged bone. It's new but not quite perfect. The main blade is off center enough to touch the clip so I sent it in for some tweaking. I got on tom Ploppert's list for a lock back whittler (probably be 2018 as it's tedious pattern and he doesn't like to do them often, there is two in front of me) but I wanted to try out carrying one for awhile before then so picked this up to test it out. I like my stockman and had never tried a whittler so was as good a time as any.

I appreciate your helpful comments, Jack! :) Two fine knives for you - something old, something new (relatively speaking).:thumbsup:

Thanks pal, nice to see those two together, they look to be almost identical in size

Hope everyone is having a great weekend, enjoy your Sunday :) I'm sticking with this Joseph Allen WW1 'Gift Knife' today, and an older Lambsfoot by Alfred Blackwell

The striking steel in the pic was forged at the old water-powered scythe works at Abbeydale in Sheffield, and now resides with one of @herder's lads :)

I took a trip to Estonia and found this little blade in a coastal town of Haapsalu. They are made in the area by local smiths. There were several of these on display in a "käsitöö" shop (handmade souvenirs). The steel is according to a leaflet displayed Bohler carbon steel, hardness 58-60 hrc. It was sharp but I stropped and it took a really nice edge. I will wrap the handle with some natural cord and I have started to make a pocket sheath. The lenght is 155 mm, blade lenght 75 mm so this will make a nice pocket fixed blade. Seems these have been used in Scandinavia since viking times so plenty traditional, these are called "mistresses knives", knives for the women of the house.

Thanks a lot Donn, that one is actually by Joseph Allen, carrying it for Passchendaele

Apologies Jack. I spent ages looking at the stamp. Thought I could see a 'Joseph' and my Saturday night ale brain just made up the rest.

Wonderful Ettrick landscape, donn!:thumbsup::cool: Spectacular vista, but the incongruous barbed wire really hooked me!

Thanks 5K. The hills in the distance are an area known as 'The Forest of Bowland' and make up some of England's high moorlands. It's hardly wilderness though; surrounded by excellent farming country  and within an easy cycle of several large towns.

No need to apologise Donn, it was lazy of me not to say

I love the way that came out, the background and the foreground bring out the jigging, great shot.
Thanks Ted!

I'd just get rid of the distractions in the background. Gotta love on line photo editors like Pixlr. Gives you so much more control than the apps you download on your phone or tablet.

Nice! I've used the app a few times, it seems i've got to check out the web version too :)

Very nice photo zolthar zolthar
Thanks Alan!

Sensational vista pict of your Case amber bone stockman, Mark!:cool::thumbsup:
Thanks Gary! We're enjoying a week at the house of friends from my wifes family, wish the view from our own backyard was like this :)

Today it's the 66 again:

I always find it hard to avoid my own reflection in the bolsters of the knife, especially when shooting on my phone because it's hard to see on the screen with the sunlight. But this time I managed not only to capture myself, but also my brother in law who takes a picture of the silly guy that takes pictures of his knives

Beautiful Blade !!
I'm in the Beaverton Hillsboro area and I can't believe the heat wave were having here either . Looks like all week will be in the 90's all the way up to 110 later in the week .
My A/C is on stand by a long with some ice cold beverages :)

Just got this Utica Cattle knife. It was in pretty rough shape but I got cleaned up and sharpened. I had to tighten the pivot a bit on the blade side and the spey blade had a small chip that I was able to get rid of. Has pretty good snap on the main blade and punch but the spey blade is a bit lazy. The main blade has lost some length due to sharpening but plenty of steel left.

Cool old knife

Cool old knife, indeed! I'm glad you were able to give it some TLC and get it back into service. Well done.

This one has now crossed the line from safe queen to beautiful user... great knife for car camping with the family up on the north shore of Lake Superior.

Lovely knife. It looks like it's enjoying being out and about, exploring the world. :) I hope you're having a great, relaxing time camping with your family.

I bet this one has a lot of stories to tell. If it won't take us too far off topic, what's a "gift knife"?
