What "Traditional Knife" are ya totin' today?

A solid, dependable carry.

D Duckdog I'm sure you're familiar with the Caro-Mi dining room in Tryon. The original owners spent summers in North Carolina and wintered in Miami. Haven't eaten there in close to thirty years, but I understand the food is still pretty good. They would debone the rainbow trout at the table with a pair of spoons.

Yep. Flagler had RR lines from Miami to NYC and Asheville, the highways followed. I'm from the coast of NC, but was lucky to spend many times in the "old money" spots in the mountains (albeit without money).

I'm not exactly into the sowbelly stockman, but the main blade on this knife which was a Christmas gift just called to me for some reason so I've decided to finally carry it.
...
As far as red goes I don't mind this too much, but I would much prefer a different color if given the choice. if given th choice I'd also go with a different pattern.
That sowbelly might surprise you if you give it a chance. ;) I was quite lukewarm about the pattern the first time I decided to try one, but once I got it in my pocket, I had a hard time giving other knives a chance. Probably my 2nd favorite pattern currently.

Catchy photo, FBC; cool inspirational mug!:cool:

I carried this one today, after picking it up for the princely sum of $2.87 (shipped)...

I spent quite a bit of time holding it, thinking what a nice, slim little knife with a whole lot of blade... The single blade dogleg is like a tiny Slimline Trapper. but as much as I try, I can't fall in love with that brown Delrin, or the capped end, or the overall shoddy fit and finish... So, this evening I went out to the garage and gave it a little face lift.

Close enough for an after picture

P.S. Hello all, g'day, first post, great to be here. I'm new to the forum, but not to using knives. I have been a traditional folder enthusiast my whole life, and am glad to have found this 'place', I'm learning lots, and I love the tone here on the trad forum!
Welcome to The Porch, Cutfinger; I totally agree with your assessment of this place! :):thumbsup: Fine Barlow, too!

That phrase is even older than me here GT ;) You make it sound like I have Noah's Ark in my pocket! :D

If the shoe fits ... :D:thumbsup:

Thank you, Jack. I wanted to say something clever about lambs and unicorns, but I'm only on my second cup of coffee this morning and couldn't think of anything clever. :p
I wish I had your self-control, Rachel. Inability to think of anything clever never stops me from spouting forth anyway.

Am going out tonight, so I need a carry knife to match my attire - Case equal end pen with imitation pearl scales. This one is from 1905-1920 and is 3 1/4" closed, but I'm not sure that it is a Pattern 30. Need to do some more research (and get debris out of the nail pull).

The knife has worked out well over the past couple of days and the size is good, but I still don't think I'm a sowbelly stockman kinda guy. Stockman's in general aren't my thing because the spey blades don't exactly come in handy for me, but this pattern doesn't really appeal to me.
I think it's one of those knives that I'll never really like as far as what appeals to me, but simply because it just works.
I wish they didn't crink the sheep's foot blade so heavily if at all ( the others are ground offset, why not this one ), but it doesn't feel too bad in hand and performs well so I can get over it.
Maybe I'll try a bit of random whittling with it so see how that goes.

As soon as I am done here at the office, I am hitting the woods for the weekend. Hopefully a nice bull elk and/or deer will let me at least lob an arrow in their direction. It would be really nice to fill the freezers this season. These two workhorses will be accompanying me for the weekend alongside some assorted fixed blades.
