What "Traditional Knife" are ya totin' today?

With sultry summer days ahead, it's time to get ready for fishin' and whittlin'. Today I'm totin' an L.L. Bean fisherman's knife and Wester Bros. swell center whittler. Note: Goins dates Wester Bros. from 1904 to 1967, but the anchor stamp on the small clip's tang dates from 1891 when they were Jacoby & Wester. Their knives were made by Wester & Butz (Solingen), except during the WWI years.

Just saw our Last of 9 Grandchildren graduate fromHolland Christian High School . I had these 2 Little Guys in my pockets .

Harry

Dadgummit!
Just when I was fully satisfied with my vote for Elk on the forum knife voting, you had to post those! Not sure if I've seen that swell center whittler before?

Congrats on getting the last of 9 (!) through HS!

Thanks Gary! It seems to be more common that it once was. :(

A LOT more common, it really needs to stop. I don't understand why posters keep doing it, particularly when they're not new here. Never mind 'Sorry about the modern', just crop the pic, take another, or don't post it o_O

Lol! That’s a good one Jack! And very appropriate I might add! :D

That joke is probably older than us both put together Ron! :D

Carrying these two today :)

There’s one still in there this morning! It’s got one of those Thumb Bob thingys and I’m pretty sure a Pocket Clip! :( That Sheffield and Solingen duo should get the job done nicely Jack. You have three blade styles there that all versatile! :D

Well, dealing with the issue must be an extra PITA for the mods. I don't understand why folks have to be told about this or cause extra work, the rules on it are quite clear  Thanks Ron

Hope everyone has a good week :) I'm starting off mine with these two - 2018 Guardians Lambsfoot in ebony and a Vic Electrician

Well it is advertised as a work knife
Welcome the The Porch, MH. :) That's a good looking Rough Rider :thumbsup: (but a pretty bare-bones toilet ;))!

Along for the ride today.
Vibrant, verdant post, Ken! :cool::thumbsup::cool:

...I had a very early start today, but the Scratted Ancient TC has been my stalwart companion.
Superb photo of your arresting Ancient, Dean!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

That's a quality quotidian quartet, GT.

Thanks for the Q&A, Stuart. :) (Actually, no A, but plenty of Qs.)

Carrying my Case canoe today.
Looks fantastic to me (but that's my favorite pattern, so I'm not very objective )!:cool::thumbsup:

... I have never seen anything like them and like it much more than I thought I would. I can see myself using and carrying one of these. Now which one to keep?
I hire help for my deck business from the local college, two of them are football players and their team motto is "Go Big or Go Home" well today I went BIG with this ebony EO Whaler:thumbsup:

Congrats, Leslie & Paul, on those bigger-than-life folders!!:cool::cool::thumbsup: A lot to like there!

My apologies, GT, I missed this. Been a rather busy weekend. That big one is a #53 Moose, a pretty great working knife.

I had this trio over the weekend and into today. These knives can handle anything really.

Thanks for the Moose ID, Dylan, and for posting more of your bewitching wood!:cool::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Splendid pair, r8shell r8shell !:thumbsup::cool: What's the background vegetation? It looks very familiar, but I'm neither gardener nor horticulturist, and I can't place it.

Thanks for the birthday wishes, GT! The summation of your morning gave me a hearty chuckle!
Yeah, I could only take about 3 minutes of a wedding to which I wasn't even invited. (I'm sure that was an oversight.)

Thanks for the compliment on the SAK/Douk Douk combo 5K Qs 5K Qs , they do make a surprisingly good pair. That Buck canoe you have up there is great!

Thanks for the canoe compliment, Karl. :) I have some pretty bone-handled Sodbusters, but it's tough to beat the look of basic yellow!:cool::thumbsup:

Ya gotta watch them speys!

Words to live by! ;) Always excited to see your tasty Portuguese toast!:D:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Yes, Keen Kutter and Simmons Hardware do indeed have a shared, albeit somewhat convoluted heritage that also involves Shapleigh Hardware.
Thanks for the info, Wayne. :) Sounds like something I'd be interested in researching.

The 503 (above) got delivered today after sitting in it's box for about 40 years, and went into my pocket within about 40 seconds... I still think I prefer the 501 due to the blade shape but the size of the 503 is great. I see a 440c/micarta/stainless 500 and 505 in my future though, these are such awesome knives!

Heath and Will, those are some very appealing, elegant, stylish knives!!:cool::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Two for the road, Jack!:thumbsup::cool: Notable pic of your 66 with the reflected arches in the background!:cool::thumbsup:

There’s probably no way I can keep from getting a speeding ticket this morning! I got a new Orange Mustang out of its tube this morning to share the driveway with my Maroon Viper! ;)

Stunning knife (and pic)!! :cool::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Love the Dog and Barlow show!:cool::thumbsup:

Been carrying this #35 Churchill every day for last several months...can't seem to find anything that I enjoy carrying and using more than this knife. Quite possibly the most underrated GEC pattern made within the last few years.

So much love for the Churchill on The Porch!:cool::cool::thumbsup:

Off to work I go...

Welcome to The Porch, John. :) Great knife with remarkable acrylic covers!:thumbsup::thumbsup: Based on the background, is work for you teaching math?

GT, I like seeing your captivating canoe collection and that Buck bone boat is a beauty.

Outstanding knife and photo, Gev!:thumbsup::cool::cool: What are those little spheres?

You got me! I had to open both blades to make it behave for the photograph!

THAT'S why I thought it was a single-blade! ;) Thanks for the "confession" and pioneer bone info.:cool::thumbsup:

Always enjoy seeing one of your #26s, Ken!!:cool::cool:

Thanks, GT; I have ordered another teardrop.
...
I gave my Case knives a rest today and took my Blood Red TC Barlow for a trip on the treadmill.

Looking forward to seeing your next teardrop, Dean.:thumbsup: One blade or two? Fine Treadmill Companion!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

I watched this, and wondered, "These guys got paid for this?" But then the Jamaica joke landed, and it was all worth it! :p:D:D

Some good stuff you're totin' there, @Misplaced Hillbilly !:cool: I especially like the looks of that little Crescent wrench; that could come in handy.:thumbsup:

Thank you very much for the kind words my friend !!! I expect that you have seen both of them before . They are what I like to carry when we go to a crowded place , or a city , or a Church . This time it was all 3 at once in Holland , Michigan . They are both Northfields . The top one is an 18 model and the bottom is an 06 Coke Bottle Pemberton .

Thanks for the Wester pics, Stuart. I was not at all familiar with this brand. The anchor tang stamp is beautiful!

Are those magnets on the LL Bean fisherman? I guess to stick to boat or tackle box and not end up overboard?

These two just seemed appropriate this morning.

Indeed.

That is called Wandering Jew (or, as Wikipedia just told me, Tradescantia pallida) . Later in the season when it gets more sunlight, it will flower and the leaves will turn a deep purple.

Thanks, FBC. That Black Box belly is pretty sweet.

Intriguing pair, Stuart! Love that anchor (?) tang stamp on the whittler, and the covers on the toothpick just GLOW!:thumbsup::thumbsup: Liner lock on that L. L. Bean?

Thanks, GT. Yes, liner lock. I understand that Ka-Bar made the early L. L. Bean knives, but I don't know if this is one.

Thanks, Ratbert, it is a new name to me, too. The small metal rectangle on the Bean is a file for sharpening fishing hooks. Pretty handy, too.

For Wooden Wednesday, I'm totin' this large (4.5") Smith & Wesson lockback hunter, This thing is a tank, but with clean lines. According to Goins, S&W made their own knives from 1974 until 1986 when production was taken over by Vermont Cutlery. Current production may be by Taylor Brands. This knife's only marking is Made in USA stamped on pile side tang.

EDITED TO ADD: the greenish spots on the blade and bolster are a reflection of a large white oak, I haven't abused the knife (though I doubt it would show).
