Thanks Chad...
That big camp knife you posted in the customs forum with wrap over wood is badass!! You did a great job on that beast.

Here are the finished pics. Any suggestions on what to call the damascus or what pattern it looks like?

It kind of looks like water. River damascus, ocean damascus, river pattern, ocean pattern

Wow, that's superb. The whole thing looks very organic and seamless. It's almost like fire meets water, then you have the forge scale over the etched damascus. Just reminds me of a burning tree rooted in a lake or something. GREAT work.

If it wasn't an intentional pattern it is by definition "random". The named Damascus patterns are intentional and repeatable as I understand it.

It was an intentional pattern... At first. I was going for a firestorm pattern but I didn't add enough w layers or twist it tight enough. It doesn't look like other firestorm I've seen so I hate to call it that.

Thanks for the compliments guys. I thought it looks like waves or dancing flames as well

Thanks bro. I really appreciate it.

Yeah, unless you start making it regularly, I wouldn't name it. You can call it a loose or low layer firestorm, or something if a customer needs a name.

Sometimes (often) mistakes in damascus are still really cool, and when doing end-grain patterns, especially new ones, pretending you know exactly what the end result is going to be, is delusional. So it's always a bit experimental, but I don't think we need to call everything a specific name, especially using generic words, unless they're going to be regularly duplicated.

Believe me, we've made dozens of patterns in my shops, or the guys I work with regularly, that were cool enough to make a knife with, but never duplicated because we were chasing something cooler. Usually they get call "Oh it's kind of blah blah", but we don't write it down in a book of official "damascus pattern names"... If you get my drift.. ;)

In-fact, thats maybe a good name for these types of patterns: Drift Damascus. i.e. it drifted away from where it was meant to go. ;)

It turned out really cool Mason!

If you guys want to be technical, it's a "Low layer Ws billet with a lazy twist." ;)

But, no matter what somebody wants to call it, it's cool. :)

Thanks buddy! You called it! lol I knew I wouldn't have enough material to keep stacking so I stopped and got this. I should have started with a bigger billet to get where I was wanting to go.

Most often, when a potential customer supplies a drawing of what they think would be an awesome knife to a knife maker, there's a huge gap to bridge between their drawing and what the knife maker actually makes. But not always--- ;)

I'm easily entertained, so I get giddy about things many folks wouldn't. But the idea of getting a letter from a collector on the other side of the globe, via Royal Air Mail... is pretty awesome. :)

It's almost unheard of, for it to be a great sketch of a kick ass knife with great proportions, lines, and looks like something you might have dreamt up yourself. But turns out, that DOES happen.

Lots-O hammering when you're working with 3/8" thick stock ;) :)

Fellow forumite Brian Ayres brought me a couple chunks of 4140 forklift tine drops when he came to visit. I threw together a post anvil with one of them, and it works really nice for putting bevels in, like the clip.

Almost there---

Time to put the hand hammers down and fire up the grind-O-matics... :)

I think I can live with a Harpoon Kukri Bowie :D

Pretty cool. Good customers make the whole thing worthwhile.

I've been eyeballing Kukris more and more (even though my fiancé walked by while I was viewing one and said "wow that knife is super ugly" :D), so I may be doing something for myself not too far off from what you're up to.

Nick that kukri sounds like a very nice knife you got charged with making. I know you will probably do the guard some way that is beautiful.

Very cool project.
