Id like to play with it too.... I've never Used k390, but I sharpened it once.
Dullest knife I ever saw.
It took me DAYS to sharpen.... Ugh!
I'm betting it holds its edge forever

It does hold an edge well. Mine were 66-67 Hrc and pretty thin behind the edge. I found no problem sharpening, using hard ceramics like spyderco and idahoners. And of course diamonds and cbn will work.

Cleaned up this corner of the shop to move things around and make space for a new grinder, been wanting to get this for the shop for probably two years now. Tested the 20” wheel on a small blade and already really liking how it feels while grinding.

I bought an Atoma because of it....... Still, took Forever. Haha.
Id like to make a fixed blade out of it, but it's kinda pricey.
Yeah. Its twice the price of 10v, if you are able to get both pick 10v, its a little more wear resistant. according to larrins newest article k390 is a little tougher, up until about 65 hrc, then its no tougher than 10v.

So i just say save the money if you can and go for that. The main reason i got this to be honest was just because at the moment i couldnt find any 10v less than a quarter inch thick.

That is a grail grinder you have there!
I don't have the BK but love my 20" wheel, makes for a fantastic geometry. You can make full hollows of decent height even on 2 mm stock.

That was the big reason for this grinder, I make predominantly kitchen knives and do hollow grinds and my solution for taller hollows on 1/16-3/32” stock was a 36” radius platens which works great but it’s so much smoother grinding on a wheel. This grinder is smooth enough I can leave my coffee thermos on the grinder while grinding a blade which is definitely a big plus for my coffee problem haha

Some weekend grinding. These are my 3rd and 4th hollow grinds using the 10 inch wheel. .150 thick CPM S90V. The wharncliffe is sanded to 600 grit, the drop point is at 220 grit off the grinder. Tangs are tapered.

One thing I like about hollow grinding is it has forced me to get better on the grinder! Taking the hollow up past 1 inch is challenging, but I think I got my technique down. Edges are .015.

I need to get some wheels.

I just bent a couple radiused plattens. One came out well, because it was thick and able to easily bend evenly. The other isn't very even. Makes doing consistent hollows hard.

Thanks everyone who has been contributing and participating in the thread. Seeing what everyone's been doing has helped to keep me feeling motivated to get back into it, even if I've been unable to until recently.

I've been away from making knives for far too long... after learning a whole lot over the last few months, I've redone my fixtures for my friction folder and made some new handle scales from carbon fiber today. What I've learned will translate well to future projects, but for now, here's the first set of handle scales I've made in over one and a half years.

Finally at the point where I can create the type of knife I envision as my personal style. Lots of work and room to grow/improve but happy with my progress. Also super excited that I finally have a etcher and name/makers mark for my work.
