An acquaintance has been an avid civil war buff and member of the organization that has reenactments every year. Last time I talked to him he said with his age he could no longer make the several hour drives. I researched civil war era knives and found a few images of old museum pics of bowies of that era and this is my take on the knife.
Below are the museum images found on open sources.

I left out the D guard examples due to weight and size, and the guard on mine was just big enough as shown and made from a piece of metal found years ago on private property adjacent to The Battle Of The Wilderness area. No claim being made for what it was in its previous life or timeline.
Sheath is a simple, modern age 119 style sheath.
Hopefully it will give him a little joy.

I finished polishing up the hamon on my most recent gyuto. It's definitely the nicest one I've done to date, but it's just making me even more interested in them and wanting to get more ashi on the next one! I have some ideas of what I want to change for the next one, one of which is to buy more polishing options. Hit me with your personal favorites! I just used Flitz polish on this one after a ferric etch or two.

A bit of a break in the heat today, so doing some design work and prototyping. Axe handle skinner in CPM 4V. Tee handle shape turned out very comfortable, so decided to cut out 2 more with 4 inch blades. Next up drill some holes and taper the tangs!

Will be packing up and heading out in a couple of days for the Natural State Knife Show in Roger's AR. If you're in the area come by and say hi.
