What's that you're eating?

Yesterday, I drove over 200 miles (RT) to buy 5# of Hoshigaki (Dried Hachiya Persimmons) which is considered a Japanese delicacy that's made by hand at a small farm called Otow Orchard in Granite Bay (north of Sacramento).

This is a pic of a 1# pack w/one of the hoshigaki cut open. You can cook with them but I just slice and snack on them but I have to do so sparingly because the hoshigaki cost $37/#. They ship but they charge $60/# to ship them!!!

I never asked them why it costs so much more to ship. If you're interested, you can call & ask them about that.

Here also are a couple of articles about the farm & the hoshigaki that you may find of interest:

Lots of good info about the farm/family in the 1st link and lots of pics and info about the drying process in the 2nd but the Millennial chick in the pics in the 2nd link is the author of the article & has nothing to do w/the farm.

After buying the hoshigaki, I drove over to Old Town in Folsom for lunch where I had a Reuben (my fav sandwich) w/a side salad & tall glass (24oz) of a very good IPA called Belching Beaver Phantom Bride IPA (7.1% ABV). I also had an order of Grilled Artichokes, which I neglected to photograph.

On a personal note, when I was working in the Transportation Unit of my Department, I delivered & picked up prisoners to/from Folsom State Prison (one of the oldest prisons in CA) which is located nearby. This is a picture of the entry gate to the old side of the prison that I always used:

Two chicken thighs, fried. I believe these are the last package in the freezer. But I keep finding them.

Same as usual. Salt and sugar brine. I may do a beer batter.

Sides. We need vegetables. The woman of the house is ultra picky on what. She bought fresh green beans and snap peas. I'll fry those together and separate from the chicken. With some bacon, garlic powder, salt and brown sugar.
