what's wrong whit Buck Knives?

was surprise the quality ,fit & finish, lockup ect. For under $30.00. It was probably best deal I came across, also one thing I'm not a steel nut, what works for me I'm good. Gary. Sorry about the double post, I'm no computer whiz.

For whatever it's worth I've had 1095 and 52100 that's every bit as hard to sharpen as steels like S30V and Vanadis 4E.

All of these steels are good for certain reasons. If it comes down to it I'd rather have a high hardness tough steel.

Some of these claims that this steel or that steel are too hard to sharpen is baloney. I haven't had a steel yet that absolutely needed diamonds to get razor sharp. I've absolutely seen my fair share of damaged edges and all are a pain in the ass to repair with any kind of stone. The softer they are the easier they are to repair but on the flip side they deform/dent easier making edge damage more likely.

ESEE makes a fine knife out of 1095 but 56 RC isn't hard enough to resist much edge damage. Buck's 420HC is fine, too, for the price. It breaks fairly easily and doesn't keep an edge for crap though. So far the best steel I've used is Vanadis 4E. It's a tough MF and has a high enough carbide volume to keep going and going. At 61 RC it resists denting so when it comes time to sharpen I don't need to do much even after a lot of serious use.

Hell, had buck announced they were putting 5160 out at 60-62 RC? I would've been interested myself.

I'd really like to suggest to Duane and Pinnah to get the new Spyderco Mule Team in 4V and give it a whirl. If you two have the slightest ability to work with some handle material you have a really nice knife for less than $80.

There's a reason why the blade sports champion has won the last two years' competitions with a steel very similar to 4V. That reason is because the edge just doesn't die. It's a bulldog version of M4.

Now if you want to get the best knife for the lowest price, buck isn't a bad place to start, for sure, but it's not where you go to get genuine, real world performance. The only people who think otherwise don't know what performance is. That's just the truth of it.

5160 has 0.70 percent chromium

3v has 7.50 percent chromium

13 or 14 percent chromium is considered stainless

WRONG AGAIN DUANE.

Even more out of ***r world, and look it up how much chromium is in this steel! I have seen D2 rust in a day. The trick isn't to put it on the back deck and let it get rained on over night. Something as simple as tree saps, especially pine resin combined with even just damp air and being left in the sheath for over night safety will have D2 rusting in the morning.

Log off stop reading what to expect from a steel. I see an awful amount of go look this up from ***. I must apologize, I never uploaded my experiences to the Internet before it existed, because it wasn't there. Even after it was invented I didn't get it for a long time.

I can 100% tell you steel quality and extreme consistency in heat treat is much more normal today than it was back when.

All I wish for is for *** to have a good day, no one is right and *** keep telling yourself I'm wrong enough *** just may actually believe it some day.

3V rusts, 5160 rusts, 1095 rusts, even 12c27 rusts but that stuff takes more than a week of extreme exposure and abuse to do it, then maybe it will.

Have fun at school today.

You are correct again, I am starting to truly believe they are one in the same.

Then he says have fun at school today like its an insult... I'm not ashamed of being a criminal Justice student in college dude.

I also happen to own a farm and use my knives daily, where he gets the idea HE is the only one who uses his knives? I will never know.

But that same train of thought was also in the dude who was banned.
Boris was 11b, also.

So chromium levels don't matter and 5160 is as rust resistant as 3v.. What ever man, keep believing that, your the ONLY ONE for a reason. And its not because you right Lol

I use 3v EVERY DAY.

You continue to avoid my question.

Please describe the quality differences between a $30 Buck 110, a $90 GEC Micarta #42 and a $60 Spyderco Cara Cara 2 Ti.

I'll take a shot at this question. How hard can it be? Hmm, let's see...

:dejection:

:torn:

:disturbed:

:fatigue:

I've got it! :triumphant:

The GEC and Spyderco both come with a high quality leather sheath! :applouse:

Wait a minute. That's not right. Buck supplies the nice sheath. :hopelessness:

Okay, I give up. :blue: :D

And I am happy that *** do. Don't get upset at me though when I say I have used them low end steels daily multiple decades. Grew up on a farm, live on a farm. We are more alike than not.

Just cool down. Don't get upset when I do not see the added cost for marginal gains and plenty of cons being worth it FOR ME.

May the spirit of the wild be with *** on the Sunday opener. Looks like weather is going to be much warmer this year than last year.

And back to the original thread topic:
-Buck knives are just fine
-There are different levels/prices of Buck knives
-There are more than two types of steel for a reason
-People will continue to have opinions, most of which are wrong. ;)

Well done sir...

*dignified applause

For what it's worth, my favorite outdoors knives are, respectively, made of 1095, CPM-3V, 420HC and S35VN. They all work well for what they're designed to do. One of them is even a Buck. ;)

1095 and 420HC?

You're either doing it wrong or have no standards.

As Pat Paulsen reminded us, "Others have upped their standards, so up yours'."

As long as Buck makes knives in the USA I'm going to buy them. I have a couple Esees that are my favorite but I love my 110 and my edc bantams, and my Compadre (5160 high carbon) is a close second fave to my Esee 3. I still plan on picking up a 119, just cause I like it and I know it's a good knife.

I can't understand what you are saying here. What is with all the ***?

He is blurting out the word "you" because guyon said if your post contains "you" than its addressing members and not the topic. He thinks he smart by using *** in place of you lol

Not the $28.00 ones from Walmart.

I guess I am a lone holdout there... I have 3 of them. ;)

Like others have said, nothing wrong with being low end, and I'm poor so they work for me. Plus I like getting ones from different years of production, etc.

A moderator made a reply saying not to say certain words. So I thought it would be courteous to do as they asked. Even though that guy keeps saying it, I feel as if I should be offended now.

It makes perfect sense if sentence structure is a basic knowledge. Just look at the number of * and fill it in with a word until it makes sense. Either way I won't be tricked into saying them words so I will be reprimanded for doing what a moderator said not to do.

Or just fill them in with rainbow and sunshine.

Good day sir.

This is getting insanely odd.

Time to start posting pics of Olympic pole vaulters or something.

No pole vaulters... Just some old-fashion and out of date knives.

Buck 110 and 112 by Pinnah, on Flickr

Preach man, I got 3 of them so far. I may not use them a lot but I like having them.

Does the smaller knife not have a nail nick or is it made for leftys? I wish I could get some nail nick knives with the nick on the other side.
