What's your Camp Knife ?

My favorite is the Koster BushMaster. Here is a review I did on it over on the BushcraftUSA forum:http://bushcraftusa.com/forum/showthread.php?t=61712

My favorite "beat'em up" Ka bar Kukri for heavy use, and SanRenMu 710 black for delicate ones....

"I am the hunting knife, I am the talon, the beak and the fang of my master. My duty is ancient as is meat and blood"
"Eίμαι η μαχαίρα κυνηγιού, είμαι το νύχι, το ράμφος και το δόντι του αφέντη μου. Το καθήκον μου είναι αρχαίο σαν τη σάρκα και το αίμα"

These two JKs fill the bill for me.

soon to make a kydex sheath for it since my German short-hair pointer ate the factory one.

Ha, ha. They are chewers when they get bored, and left alone for a long time. Mine ate a portion of the wainscoting off the kitchen wall when I had to work late one night.

This is gonna handle all my heavy stuff

And I aint tested it much yet...but I think this one will do nicely for everything else

Great examples guys. :) Anybody use older knives for their camp knife? I've got an older Schrade 165 coming, and was thinking that might make a pretty good camp knife. If all else fails, I still have my ESEE 6 to fall back on, but is there no love out there for those old tried and proven knives?

I used to beat the heck out of Ol Hickory butcher knifes when I was a kid, ''just like the mountain men'' LOL

Never managed to break one, bent one bad enuff to not come back true tho...but if I recall right I was using it for a crowbar. I still have a few Ol Hickorys around...will buy em on sight at fleam markets/yard sales/thrift shops if they are in good shape and cheap

For camp knives these are my first choice

For some heavy chopping these will come along

I plan on trying these out this deer season

Last year I acquired more than I camped, so I have some catching up to do! These are on my list to put through the paces (couple each DFarmer, GL Drew, a "few" Alan Davis, a Dimitry Malakhov wootz blade (excuse the spelling if wrong), and an RJ Evans Bushlore). Plus slipjoints to try out and learn from

Then there is what I made, or select groupings (all wood handles, all damascus, all 3/32....)

Of course there is being out on the water, might break out the Boye dendritic cobalt/spyderco salt.....
Or I might just let my daughter choose what she wants me to carry off of my dresser

I love choices!

Think I need some outdoor shots, though.

A quick question .... in the States does a "Camp Knife" not usually refer to a larger blade for Wood prep / Camp Cooking ? A lot of knives posted here would come under "belt or bushcraft knives" over here ....

Typically it is a larger blade. When I camp, I am backpacking so a large (5") bushcrafting blade works best for my small fire building and cooking at camp on the trail. If I were driving into camp then I may use a larger knife.

That's what I consider a 'camp knife', hence my choice of the Bark River Hudson Bay.

I need to take some pics after my doctors' appt. today....

My camp knife is either my Junglas or this RatManDu I just got. I haven't used it yet which is why it looks brand new (just got it a week or two ago).

To me, my camp knife is the primary backup to my axe/hawk, and thus can be a wide range of blades. I primarily use my blades for food and wood processing, so any knife I choose falls into that realm. Plus I've never cared for the 'camp knife' term, I've seen everything between 4-10" called a camp knife. It depends on what I decide to take with me. If it is just a hawk and folder then the folder gets camp knife duties beyond what the chopper gets. I like using my knives no matter how they are classified!

I have been using an ESEE 4 but as soon as i break in my new SYKCO 511 its being replaced. I have a 711 on order to see if i will like the larger blade, but im usually partial to a 4-5" for camping duties here in Arizona.
