What's your Camp Knife ?

To me, my camp knife is the primary backup to my axe/hawk, and thus can be a wide range of blades. I primarily use my blades for food and wood processing, so any knife I choose falls into that realm. Plus I've never cared for the 'camp knife' term, I've seen everything between 4-10" called a camp knife. It depends on what I decide to take with me. If it is just a hawk and folder then the folder gets camp knife duties beyond what the chopper gets. I like using my knives no matter how they are classified!

I think a lot of the confusion stems from the widely varying conditions of "camping." You have everything from ultralight backpacking to month long camper camping and thus a wide variety of needs from the blades.

A quick question .... in the States does a "Camp Knife" not usually refer to a larger blade for Wood prep / Camp Cooking ? A lot of knives posted here would come under "belt or bushcraft knives" over here ....

but the thing is i don't have any large knife anymore. what i have now are 4" and the rest are machetes. for wood prep it's either an axe or a saw for me...hence the "belt or bushcraft" knives that i posted as my camp knife. i've used my machete to slice up spam before though :D

You crazy spam fiend, you. :p

come to think of it, i don't even like using my belt knives for food prep since they're not a good slicer...machete all the way! :D

i prefer to use an axe for wood prep, but most bigger camp chores are handled by my old trusty ML knives, deep woods butcher/camp knife.. i have had this knife for many years.. it has served me well..

It's a 3v Shookum Bush Tool by Rod Garcia...absolutely the best all around camp knife I've had the pleasure to use. The one beneath it is a Gossman Psk, great little blade.

Been testing the bottom Siegle for the last month

Thanks, I looked them up and they really look like a nice blade. I especially like the pommel plate, although I'd probably still grab for a rock or log to hammer with while hiking.

Dr. Bill, that Siegle is sweet. Looks like a monster chopper, but still has the finesse for those thin cuts.
