Whelp. Time to order some more steel. So what's next?

The response here has been loud and clear and I think I understand now that the pre-orders are more important to folks than I realized.

I am but a noob to CPK, but I definitely appreciate the pre-orders. I've never managed to get in on a Friday sale, despite practicing and waiting, watching the clock with fingers hovering over the keys. I have managed to pick up some very nice knives on the exchange though, and I will keep trying on Fridays. It's really nice to know I've got Basic 5's or FK3's coming for everyone in the family, and I'm definitely looking forward to the K20's. I have dealt with custom gunsmiths a lot -- only waiting 4 months past a 1 year estimated delivery time (as seems to be the case with the shiv pre-order -- wish I had known about CPK in time to get in on it) sounds positively delightful. Hoping to pick up EDC 1.2's, skinners, and others. My $.02

I’ve only recently (since last August) discovered CPKs . Before that owned white rivers, bark rivers, busses, and other fixed blades . Since then, I’ve acquired 7 or 8 CPKs on the secondary and have 4 (DEK1, DEK2, BFK, EDC1) that are keepers. Aside from 2 large INFI Busses and a few customs, the rest are gone . I haven’t yet had a chance to get in on a pre-order yet (k20 isn’t my jam) but have been looking forward to the chance to customize when the right model pre order is offered and avoid the secondary mark ups . Hoping you will run pre orders in the HDFK, Light chopper, EDC and more in the coming years . Would love a folder too ! Keep on keepin on and so glad you decided to not do away with the pre orders .

Pre-orders are the best!! Please keep them coming. Personally, the wait is of little significance when compared with the daunting task of scoring in the top 10 for Friday sales.

I vote HDFK for another round. I’m sure the demand would be through the roof! It is the most comfortable design I have ever had the pleasure to grasp. That design was another one that went when my second kid came along and the secondary market has priced me out. EDC would be great too!

Happy to hear this! As someone who was only introduced to your knives last year, I’ve become a big fan of your work. But as it goes with any high-end maker, I know there’s going to be a wait list of some sort. So for me, pre-orders feel like a great way to get ‘caught up’, no matter the wait time. 👍

I'm pretty late on the Shiv pre-order and I'm catching some flack for it. Well deserved flack. When I start these pre-orders I lack the crystal ball to know what other aspects of my business are going to interfere with production and I'm not willing to just do the pre-order at the expense of everything else, I need to have the whole shop flowing. The K20 swords (which are early) made the Shiv late. That is not the fault of the people who bought the Shiv, it's mine. But this is the reason why I don't think I want to do pre-orders anymore. It gives me a black eye and it screws up our flow here. Too many complainers. The worst thing about the complainers is that they're right. I hate that. I can sell everything that I make. The pre-orders are for the convenience of people that don't like the regular sales or who want something special. And I want to accommodate these people. But not at the cost of my reputation. Pre-orders are bad business.
Nate, a few years ago I had some success with Friday sales, scored a couple of cool knives and enjoyed the rush. I haven’t participated in them for a while both because my schedule changed and because it is way more frustrating than it is fun. That’s why a lot of people (myself included) would prefer a drawing.

I for one appreciate the pre-order. I have swords and knives that I wouldn’t have been able to get otherwise that are slightly unique and more special to me. Sometimes things run late and as a whole you have been good on communicating that, and it’s appreciated.

Whatever you do there will always be someone who isn’t happy. There’s nothing you can do that everyone will like. Ultimately you have to do what you think is best for your business. That is how you take of care of your family and that by far is the most important thing.

On a personal note I’d prefer you keep the pre-orders available. It allows some customization and guarantees that I get something I like. It also allows you the flexibility to take on new challenges that might not otherwise be possible.

The only benefit to me if you stop doing pre-orders is that I’ll end up saving money by not buying as many knives. It’s not a threat or a dig. It’s just the way it is. Friday sales are just too hectic and random to be fun. Overall it’s a frustrating process that I no longer enjoy. Pre-orders are my preferred means of buying your knives.

What are Jo’s thoughts on the pre-orders?

In summary, I hope you keep doing pre-orders and taking my money.

Kevin
