When it's not exactly Made in the USA - Hoback

From what I’ve seen, Hoback is taking steps in the right direction. Hopefully he keeps at it. I’m sure some makers out there would just as soon said “whatever” and ignored the situation. So the people flaming will continue to flame.. but I for one hope Jake gets his shit together and rebuilds the relationships with dealers.

Doesn’t matter. Some people delete posts if people are flaming them or trolling too much. Some delete them because they think it’s damage control… why does it matter? You know what they say about assumptions?
And some people delete them when the comments don't fit the narrative they're trying to get across.

He could have just turned off comments. He didn't have to nuke every mention of this drama.
I disagree. I understand why people flaming him WANT all the comments to remain, but if the comments aren’t productive, why keep it active?

I wonder how many here are posting there in parallel to fuel the fire?

Are you being deliberately obtuse? He could delete negative comments, lock further commenting, and keep the posts themselves. He chose not to.

I think for many of you he’s going to be damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t. All that’s going to help is fixing the COO info, an apology, and we all move on with life. No one is holding a gun to anyone to make them buy Hobacks. The market will decide his future.

Are you being obtuse? You made assumptions about why he did what he did with his social media posts… I disagree. Now you’re calling me “deliberately obtuse”? How about we drop the “why did Jake delete this, why did Jake delete that” theories? It’s a waste of time.

Hey Just for fun. Quick recap for those just joining us.

Was the retail price of the knives
A) Wow this is an amazing deal; how can he make these in the USA for this price?
B) Completely par with other similar knives that were legitimately made in the USA?

There are no wrong answers.

Pretty sure plenty of people have suggested solutions.

Posting that COO chart was a good start. He said he was going to have his web dev update his official website with COO on all products, that would have been good. Instead he backtracked and deleted all that.

He should make the COO transparent, apologize for potentially misleading anyone, and move on. That's really all he needs to do. Taking back stock from or crediting vendors who felt misled would be a solid move too.
He did that, because someone at his company most likely informed him that that chart means that nobody will ever pay $600+ for a Sumo again now that they know it was made by a faceless factory worker in China.

C) These are a little pricey even for USA-made but you can justify it if you like the design.

His knives cost more than CRK or Spartan.

I even joked a few days ago that the new Summit looked like an overgrown Bestech... I wouldn't be surprised if Bestech was indeed his OEM.

CRK knives go way higher, but yeah, for base versions.

OTOH, Reate makes knives that cost as much, not to mention knives made by them for other US designers.

I’m going to assume you’re just being dramatic but I would hope that you don’t seriously think of factory workers in China as “faceless”, whatever the hell THAT means. They are people too. They have lives, they have to earn a living.

Wouldn't surprise me, either. Bestech is doing some very good OEM work for companies like Vero Engineering. Some of Vero's knives go for >$600.

Not being versed in commerce or business myself I wonder who would set those high retail prices.

28 different dealers or the knife importer?
Given that the going theory from some folks seems to be that the dealers do whatever they want with no input or correction from the makers they work with, I’m guessing we’ll be seeing a video sometime soon with an apology for why his knives cost so much. “Well I mean, I told this one dealer not to charge $650, but it didn’t get corrected and then they were all doing it….”

Hey, gotta feed that family, I get it!
