When it's not exactly Made in the USA - Hoback

You and "they" are like a self-fulfilling prophecy...doomed by mere proximity. If you can't or won't ignore one another by using the software, then do it the old fashioned way by keeping your fingers off the keyboard...for the good of the site, and all that is holy. And the children, of course.

I think my post summed it up well. Some feel the dealers play a large part in all of this. Most people feel the buck stops at Hoback himself. He is, of course, culpable but to PRECISELY what extent, we can't know because there are aspects that none of us know. The dealers may well play a part but to PRECISELY what extent, we can't know for the same reason as above.

What is evident is that Hoback is the gatekeeper and should've asserted himself. These days with the social media avenues available, there really is no excuse to let known misconceptions about your product persist. Assuming that he was telling the truth when he said he knew of them and attempted to correct them.

Well I think some dealers will still carry his knives and some won’t. In the end, it’s about the almighty dollar. Some distributors go hard on principles and some will just shrug their shoulders and change COO to ”China” and move on with life. If they don’t sell, they won’t buy more. The market will sort this out.

China can produce great things. Agree that the dollar will decide. There will definitely be those - dealers and users - that will forever move on. Others may reestablish agreements with expectations clearly laid out. Orders will definitely be slim for Hoback in the near term and may never fully recover.

I’ll make the assumption that he made a COO change to China because making them in house was putting him under water. I don’t see the guy rolling around in Land Rovers flashing a million dollar house. Without a large set up how would he make a good profit? Probably had to move to China to keep the business alive.. but the problem is “target audience” doesn’t like that sort of thing. Imagine if CRK got busted doing the same? People would raise hell.

This is going to be tough for him to solve.. and I’m betting right about now the thought of quitting entirely is an option he’s considering.

It would have taken very little effort to write an email, CC all the dealers and make a social media post clarifying the issues . Then it would have all been documented and this thread wouldn’t be here.
I didn’t find the information from the apology video beneficial to Mr. Hoback’s culpability. I hope anyone that’s been wronged, gets made whole.

That was one of the scenarios I offered in my post a fee pages back.

I find it hard to believe that every dealer would just assume, read copy, or go along with the other. Did some? Probably. But ALL of them? Hmmm.

In NONE of the contract discussions, origin and manufacture didn't come up? Like, at all? It had to, right?

So, Hoback initially was pumping out knives but 28 is a LOT of product. He made the choice he had to, was scared how business would be affected, waited, waited some more, tried to garner the strength, but failed. Now it comes out like this.

Does that mean we feel sorry for him? Maybe as a human but not as a business or person. No, it's his fault. That's just the way it is when you're in charge and it goes sideways.

-American made blades sell at higher prices that an equal quality Chinese made blades.
-Whether by omission of facts or outright lies, manufacturer deliberately deceived consumers.

This company will most likely face civil lawsuits and file bankruptcy. I would bet on it.

Edit: I was considering the Sumo and I would probably still buy one for a significant discount. Maybe $200?

Other than 100% USA made...
Got a Paragon Warlock made in good old North Carolina coming in on Monday. Unique design that shows off some American ingenuity. I've no problem at all with quality knives made in many other countries, but I'm always pleased to get a nice piece of steel that supports a more local economy.

There are some GREAT knives made in China. It’s different when you know you are buying a Chinese made knife though

In my mind Hoback clearly likes to dance on the edge of plausible deniability like a politician.

Personally, I don’t care to deal with his ilk.

The two counselors have merely pointed this out with some valid points, and made for an interesting debate and thread.

Only one of 'em, (if I'm one of the parties being referred to), is an attorney, or if he's not, he can tell you. I am not a lawyer.

I made business for attorneys by arresting folks for various federal violations ranging from narcotics and money laundering, to arms smuggling and anti-terrorism charges.

What I know of the law is simply a byproduct of my former occupation and the many trials I participated in.

Good luck with that! Maybe you can find a PO'd owner who'd rather get $200 for it than bust it up for no reason.

I own one and love it. The fact that it was made in China doesn't make it less valuable to me. The truth is that there probably isn't a knife maker in America capable of the exquisite milling on those Ti handles. Well, Koenig could probably pull it off, but then it would cost $800.
