When it's not exactly Made in the USA - Hoback

I watched this entire video of the sumo.
In 15min he mentioned "a machine shop" once. Here would be a good time to mention the knife is made in China. You take the time to make a 15min video of a 550.00 knife and fail to mention it's completely made in China. Also, listen to the introduction (or don't I begrudgingly did) how he goes on a spiel about how HE makes knives and has all this machining experience and how HE has 20 years knife making experience. That kind of talk is misleading.

I think the only thing we disagree about is whether the dealers bear any responsibility at all. In my opinion, Hoback had a responsibility to set the record straight immediately. He admits that. But I also think dealers have a responsibility to post accurate product descriptions. Most of y'all don't seem to think that's the case.

Actually, I suspect everyone in this thread would agree with you 100% on this.

We do not KNOW everything that happened, or who said what, and when. None of us here do, and it is entirely possible that no one anywhere really remembers for sure. So we are forced to make assumptions based on the limited facts we have available. By his own admission Hoback knew that dealers were misrepresenting his knives to the public. He is also on camera seemingly misrepresenting them to a customer or dealer. His website also STRONGLY implies (but carefully never states -- I checked) that he makes his own product -- they even have or had shop videos showing where the magic happens. Again, if nothing else he KNEW that the dealers had it wrong, he knew that he was profiting from this error, so he allowed it to continue.

He KNOWINGLY continued deceiving his customers and dealers for money. That, my crafty friend, is potentially fraud.

In any case, from what we KNOW we can all draw conclusions about the things that we do not know for sure. For example, who is likely to be lying. I tend to believe that the guy who has profited from these lies, and who has a now self-evident history of lying, is probable the guy STILL lying. And if we are asked to assume something without evidence, to take someone at their word, it seems sensible to believe the dealers rather that the liar. That's my conclusion. Yours might be different.

(And for what it is worth I am glad you have participated in this thread. It is always a good thing to have someone standing against the mob demanding that they check and recheck their conclusions and anger.)

Dealers can’t post what Hoback willfully hides. I’m not buying it. He made knives in China, and he didn’t tell anyone… now 3D Anvil 3D Anvil wants to point the finger at the dealers for making an assumption about the COO in good faith. It was reasonable to assume Hoback made his knives in the US.. and if he didn’t send documentation or certification disclosing this change, (and really should’ve done more), it isn’t a good look.

Time to just face it: Hoback tried to be a slicky boy, and it didn’t turn out how he thought it would.

I won’t buy a Hoback after this.

As far as the dealers are concerned. I wouldn’t post any specs/info that I couldn’t prove was provided by the maker. It’s 2022, Excel spreadsheets and email are a thing. That way I’d at least have something to prove the maker lied to me if I was a vendor. If I was the maker it would prove the vendor misrepresented my knives. This isn’t hard. This whole thing is sloppy from every angle.

I'd have to do a search, but I swear there was a thread a few years ago about someone that wanted a Hoback knife, but didn't want Psalm 23 on it. The person said they contacted him and he said no, that every knife he made would have that on it. At the time I thought he was just sticking to his principles, but now it looks like all the handles may have already had it machined in them when they came in on the slow boat from China...

I don't think my heart can take this...I've got to go lay down.

Just bopping around the internet and I came across the the Hoback OSF Hero series of knives. These are knives meant to honor those who serve, and are emblazoned with the different branches of the military and law enforcement. These were listed as Made in the USA but as it turns out, they are China/usa made.

That one stings, Jake.
I’ll be he didn’t specify which county’s service people it was dedicated to. 😏

How do you make an assumption in good faith? "He didn't say what the steel was, but I'm assuming it's...?"

Because Hoback started out making knives in the US.. switched some products to COO China, and didn‘t tell anyone. “Phone calls” to dealers isn’t good enough. Should’ve had documentation to that effect included with sales order when shipped to dealers.
