It's like this Dinkum....I don't play on the General Forums that much....and warn other serious knife people not to as well because it is where the noobs, know-nothings and troublemakers roost...in other words, an exercise in frustration for Los Veteranos.

The bottom line is that the members that DO support BladeForums provide a base that Spark can work with so that many features are free for non-paying members.

There isn't anything wrong with wanting to get something good for free. There IS MUCH wrong with bitching about something that you get for free, and saying it isn't good enough for you.

For those of you griping about what a gyp that BladeForums is while remaining in freeloader status....go somewhere else...participate there(if you can) and see what quality of discussion you wind up with(not very good) and learn something(if you can).

That advert earnings estimate is ridiculous since there is not a single ad to be found on BF.
A few questions for you:
Do you have any idea how much it costs to run a site with as much traffic as bladeforums?

Do you see any banner ads, adsense ads or anything else on this site?

oooooo ok. so instead of simply changing it for free from that member he decided to lump that feature into the Plat M. which costs $50 a year. gotcha.

The content in question that is being blocked is only available with a paying membership anyways. Its kind of like 6 of one and half a dozen of the other. Since that is the only area of BFC that you cant read (other then the Mod only forum) your really not missing anything by not having the “PG” membership.

This is the thread from Service and Support that was the start of the “PG” membership. You would benefit from reading it, Spark did a lot of work simply because he was asked to.

I never said it was huge, did I? It is, however, a large forum. Now, about those ads... see any? What about those other "huge" forums you speak of? See any there?

Site owners need to make money to support the site somehow. Some choose ads, some choose memberships. Since you're obviously such an internet forum expert, I'm surprised you seem to miss the point.

If you don't want to go to certain forums here, don't go. It's silly to worry about and if you don't want to pay the 10 dollars for a basic membership don't. If you don't want to be here then log out and stop coming. If you don't want to pay 25.00 dollars to have unlimited sells of personal goods, then don't.

There is a particular forum that becomes available when you buy a gold or platinum membership. This forum has no rules. A guy with a platnium membership did not want that forum available on his computer, so Spark made a special membership just for him.

Nobody else cares about or wants that option. he was just doing a member a favor.

I like to finally voice my opinions on bladeforums.com. Notice how only some manufactures are listed, some large well known ones and some unknown ones. One would think the largest and most popular brands have their own forums section, but that is not the case. There is some commercial profiting shenanigans going on here between this forum and those companies. Also, notice if you don't pay the ridiculous $30 member fee, you can't even search not to say no PM. This is the only forum I belong to that does this sort of thing. I have been here for a bit and it seems in my short stay, this place has gone from "for the people" to almost commercial.

You're right, we should all spend 30 minutes a day fixing bugs, editing inappropriate post, clearing spam, allowing my personal PC to be used for storage space (PM's have to reside somewhere, searches have to use computing power somewhere).

I appreciate what this forum supplies me with, and I'm willing to pay the $30 a year for it. The gold membership also allows you to sell knives. Since I paid that $30, I have saved hundreds each year by selling my unused knives to buy new ones instead of adding new capital to my knife budget.

As a basic member, you get a whole lot for free.

BTW, with a little extra syntax in a google search, you can search BF.com with google.

I can't believe this needs saying, but ... BF has many membership levels. One of them is Platinum. Gives you almost everything every other membership does. Top shelf. But some Plat members have familes with young children. They asked if Spark could provide a modified Plat that wouldn't show titles or access the cruder forums. He did.

They still have all the benefits of Platinum membership, without the drawback of accessing material they don't find amusing.

Search. I'll say again what others have told you. Go to Google and put in your search terms - and add in "bladeforums". Google will search for your topic on Bladeforums. For free.

Membership. $10 a year is less than 20 cents a week. $50 a year is less than a dollar a week. We have people here who are young, or struggling, or out of work, or raising a family, or building a business. They treasure the few knives they've been able to afford, and look forward to a paying membership, perhaps, when the money works out.

Their -- your -- participation is worth more to this community than money. But we do need money. Spark pays for this place out of what One Stop Knife Shop earns him -- and he doesn't even post a link to 1SKS because that would compete with dealer memberships.

That's integrity. It would be nice to think it would earn him appreciation -- which it does, among those who understand.

can I ask why you would waste your time?

the features are not things i want or care to have. for an annual fee.these are natural questions that one would wonder when coming to a forum that asks for money for very common simple features. im not asking these things cus i want those features im just curious. having been posting on forums for a while and being in huge ones and very successful ones from the beginning this is all new to me. i noticed that there is a wolfpack mentality here with not to many individual thinkers. surprisingly some people have answered some of my inquiries without the usual ignorant redneck rage. btw this is the first time i ever heard someone mentioning the google bfc search. that is kind of funny. when you push people a bit is when you get results.

This topic has been done before. The world did not wait for you to come along before learning to whiiinne. We even have a special forum for it here.

What we do not have is much tolerance for insulting other members. "rednecks all over middle america" is ... not polite.

You have no access to PMs. Too bad. You do have access to visitor messages and email through the forums. What you get for free is worth the price.
