Why Won't Noss Stand Behind His "Work?"

Why won't Noss stand behind his work publicly?

  • He is anonymous for security reasons, but doesn't realize this looks bad.

  • He understands, on some level, that his "tests" are less than he is presenting them to be.

  • He has something to hide that calls his "tests" into question.

What a great troll:

1.) Loaded poll
2.) Circular arguments without taking objective criticism and points to the contrary into consideration
3.) History of being divisive
4.) Irrational bias

All under the guise of LOOKIN' OUT FOR THE MANUFACTURER'S!

Where'd he go?? :)

thats quite a mouth full of psychobabble mr culpepper and it assumes much about your opinon. I fear you view yourself a legend in your own mind. good luck in your quest to make sense in your future posts.

Uh, I can see you are sort of new around here. Your 9th post. We generally don't try to get to know the replacements. Logic being they haven't suffered enough yet.

It's Noss that gave me the knife virus. Since I discovered his tests I've been hooked to knives and visiting bladeforums.com daily. I never made a purchase or intended to make one based on his tests but he certainly had some influence on me. I've seen his infamous tests on the CRK knives but I'm still interested in getting a GB one day.

I don't know what's the big deal really, he's only offering some insight on the ability of the knives he test to withstand hard use. He helped people like me to get into the knife world and that's great. I don't know if we can say so much about the author of this thread. As for the hockey mask, it adds to the character IMO. I prefer to remain anonymous on the internet and understand fully his desire to do so as well.

all right, people are making sense on page 3!! Phil's poll is absurd in its bias. Noss likes to beat knives to death, then share the info with others. You may regard this as useful or not, but there is >>>NO<<< evidence that he is intentionally biasing his tests to make one manufacturer look better/worse.

Noss maintains anonymity, who knows why? Maybe b/c he anticipated the silly blowback he might get from people unhappy with his results. But unlike Cliff he doesn't feel compelled to get into a detail-for-detail snit war in every post about his claims; he just does what he does & then moves on to the next knife.:thumbup::thumbup:

I spared the reader most of your subjective smear campaign. But to state the least, contempt prior to investigation is a weakness. Theonew put up a poll and numbers speak for themselves. Theonew closed down the thread when it became counter-productive. That caused more stress than a select few could bear. In essence, by closing that thread he brought out some dwarfs with parody polls. Dwarfs suffer from the Neopleon Complex and like to beat dead horse subject matter. Your demand is not worth the zeroes and ones it comprises. The person in question owes the public nothing. Freedom of expression is a right in his land of plenty. Your raid is just a sympton of the Lord of the Flies Syndrome and just another viruii trying to start a little plague.

kiahs, You mean insults like the above too, or does this pass appropriate muster, and why?

Yay. Let's all start slinging insults at random people. That always clears up an argument on the internet.

By "all" I meant "all". Forgive me for not quoting Culpeper's post too. All these threads end up the same way, with people taking everything personally and acting like their back in gradeschool. I stayed out of most of the rest of them, and probably should have stayed out of this one too.

The OP's argument has been refuted, whether he wants to respond to that or not. The makers who want to know who Noss is do. They can call him up and discuss the tests if they feel like it. The fact that a few here have an overblown sense of entitlement and feel that they need to know everything should not overpower a person's wish to remain anonymous to those people. It will be a sad day when anonymity is forbidden from the internet.

I'm sorry but your perceived insults were not random or even personal insults. I apologize if you thought I was referring to you, in which case, I see your perceived randomness. Please leave Kiahs out of this.

Edit: I didn't know you were a dwarf.

This reminds me of the Howard Stern film -- there was some line like the following which we could replace with Noss:

"Listeners that like Howard Stern tune in to listen to his show. Listeners who hate Howard Stern tune in to see what he is going to do next!"

I like that...:)

Not only an overblown sense of entitlement but a fallacious belief that they have some sort of right to force others to comply with their own ethical/moral belief system....Not COOL!

I recon I was wrong then. Since you quoted another poster I assumed you meant him only. I wholeheartedly agree with the highlighted portion entirely. And I stand corrected. There is more than enough of this name calling being bandied about.

Thanks

You mean we all have to post photos and real names of ourselves when we do a review from now on? Damn, I thought my real last name and first name initial were good enough for an Internet handle.

I like Noss' tests; they're fun to watch. Even if Noss weren't anonymous, would things change? Let's say Noss is really, I don't know... Bob Dozier. Yeah, Noss' real identity is Bob Dozier. I'll use that for now. Now, another poster has mentioned that several knife makers already know Noss' real identity. But somehow I doubt Chris Reeve is going to walk up to (in this case) Bob Dozier at the next Blade Show and tell him off because he took offense to a "test" done on YouTube or Knife Tests.

Likewise, once Noss is revealed to be (in this case) Bob Dozier, does that mean you will lose all respect for Bob Dozier?

If anybody should have a problem with Noss not "owning up" to who he is or what he's doing, I would think it's the knife makers themselves. I doubt this has happened though. I also doubt that Busse has sold less knives because Noss beat the hell out of a Busse on his site. I've found that Noss treats all of the knives he tests the same - he's going to beat and use them until they break. I've seen no brand preference or anything like that; he gave the Mora Clipper the same chance he gave the Busse.

ADDED: No, I have no idea who Noss really is. I don't care. Using Bob Dozier's name was for example only. If this offends you, please replace it with anybody else's name you'd like.

Culpeper,

I would ask you to re-consider your unkind remarks stated in this thread and try, if you are capable, to state you case without insulting folks.

This entire thread is a ad hominem attack that addresses none of the work of Noss, but seeks to discredit his work by insulting him personally.

The valid way to attack Noss is to try reproducing his results. Using better quantification would help. Unfortunately, if you take this route, you run the risk of finding that Noss' tests and/or results may actually be valid.

Another way to attack Noss is to prove that his testing is biased against a particular knife. I haven't heard any serious accusation in this direction, and have no reason to believe this is a real concern.

The problem here is that almost nobody is truly willing to spend the time, money, and possibly embarrassment to actually dispute his results. Instead, they attack his anonymity instead, something which has no bearing on his testing or documentation. Why not make a substantive case against the test rather than the tester?

You know, Chris Reeve did send Noss a knife under warranty. I'm pretty sure he knows both who Noss is and where he lives!!!

And about my wanting the thread locked.
Why? It is a legitimate poll and thread. Locking the thread would be an act of censorship. You wouldn't want that, would you?

I think this thread should be locked because it's too confusing trying to keep track of the same argument over multiple threads. We need one thread where all our theology on knife testing (and the ethics thereof) can be thoroughly explored in one continuous conversation.

I bet it'd be longer than the "EDC - What's in Your Pocket(s)??" thread by new years.

What a douchebag thread.

Noss obviously doesnt want you to know who he is. He also obviously doesnt care whether or not you agree with his tests. (However, I do not know him, nor will I assume what he actually thinks. This is what I think.)

Its the internet folks, things are not always as they seem.

Like a lot of things, this could be fixed by not watching it if you do not like it.

Go lay by your dish. OR, better yet, get a bunch of knives and use them as you see fit and post the videos on the internet.

The point remains: If "Noss" is going to publicly criticize the work of others, he should be willing to stand behind that work, publicly. It's really a pretty simple matter of honesty and integrity. Yes, lots of people talk trash and use the anonymity of the Internet to hide behind. This doesn't make it right -- and in the case of "Noss," it means we shouldn't take him seriously. The fact that so many do take him seriously is the problem.

Attempting to insult me in your eagerness to defend his behavior doesn't really accomplish either goal.

You're the victim..

He could tag all his videos with his Social Security Number and you'd still manage to post a whiny thread somehow.

Your whole premise is shot - back to the drawing board!

There are no victims here; there is only integrity and its lack. I have stated plainly that I think you should be willing to take public responsibility for public criticism of others' work. "Noss" has plenty of defenders who see no problem with what he does, and that, too, is part of the problem being underscored.

Declaring a premise "shot" doesn't actually make it so -- and defending irresponsible behavior doesn't magically make that behavior any less reprehensible.

I don't for a second think he'll actually take responsibility for his "tests" by identifying himself publicly. He could surprise me. It would be great if he did.

Culpeper,

I told you I was sorry. How was I to know you were a dwarf. Get over it.
