WIP give away knife - concluded & winner picked

Today is the last day to vote. Status of the vote is at the bottom of post #1. So far, #2 & #3 are neck-to-neck.

You can enter for this give-away until the thread title affix with the word 'CLOSED'.

WIP: #2 & #3 hand sanded to 100grit. #3 (tall petty) will get more distal taper after ht. Much easier to straighten a harden 52100 than cpm-m4.

Voting is closed

I'll make #3 and #2 knives. Where #2 will be an alternate/standby in case #3 fail. Hopefully both turn out well, so I can test both knives against cardboard.

Blunt, aside from what they look to be for, what are the primary purposes of knives 2 and 3?

Two looks like a camp style rugged fixed blade, while three looks almost like a kitchen knife, similar to a Santoku. I'm really interested in what kind of primary grind they'll have, as well as how you'll be handling them. Did you already choose a handle material? Also, I'm guessing that #2 will get scales, while #3 will get a pinned handle? How will you affix the scales? Just wondering if they will be removable in case the winner wants to make their own wood, micarta, g10 etc... scales.

This is going to be awesome to watch!

#3 is a petty with good knuckle clearance, aka small gyuto/chef knife. It's going to get ffg, gradual distal taper (to avoid excess tip flex). I think a spalted tamarind wood handle would goes nice with this knife. Hidden tang (but with scale instead of drill/burn hole) bond with West System epoxy. It has 1 drilled hole for optional hidden pin but I won't be necessary for kitchen use.

#2 is all around indoor & outdoor utility slicer. Heavy dark dense wood for handle with 3 hidden stainless steel pins. I might sandwich white spacer between tang & scale to bring out the contrast. Will use either g/flex or west system epoxy.

Wood handle of choice is tentative, that could change - so speak up ppl :). Winner can feel free to replace & re-shape the handle.

Can I still enter? If so, I'd like to be in on #3 please.

Let me know if I can't enter and I'll edit this post.

WIP: Heat treatment #3 (cpm-m4 petty blade)

Wrap in 2200F stainless steel foil to minimize decarb & scaling. Double fold seam. I also put some wood shavings in there to burn up oxygen.

My mobile ht oven.

Will soak 7 minutes at this temperature

OK, it warped X & Y direction.

The stainless steel foil is almost 100% welded to the #3 blade. #4 blade also got ht at the same time, it came out 99% clean (no welding/lamination).

After three tempered at 1025F for 2 hrs each time. Obviously I was greedy with 65RC - silly me for extra heat probably caused more problem than I envisioned. I peened straighten it while at temp between 800-1000F. It's now some what straightened - more is needed. Power company has a planned power outage for the next 2 days, so straightening will have to wait.

Done some sanding (no fun here). This welded/laminated will be extremely painful to remove.

I want to start over but I am out of cpm-m4. But I don't want to active the alternate #2 (52100 utility) yet. I have 2 days (without power) to think it over and maybe see how far I can clean up the blade. btw - 60 grits sand paper is hopelessly slow. I'll try 60 grits Alox stone tomorrow. Hopefully this manual clean isn't for nothing because there always a possibility that peening the blade would snap or crack.

That's really hard work and thanks for sharing the process!

I feel for you on the power outage :(

To clean up, possible using DMT XC?
