Women and Knives: Why More Women Need To Carry A Blade

I don't mean to crash the thread, but I've noticed a bit of a double-standard here...

No one has told you what an awful defensive weapon knives are, how easily someone will take them from you, and that you should get a gun instead. That's generally the standard reply when mentioning a knife and anything defense related around here...

I generally agree. Most knives are NOT designed for defense--even the ones that say they are. One of the top knife fighters says the best knife is a Spyderco PM2. As opposed to say a John Williams knife that has one purpose...stabbing people. His rationale is if have to explain to law enforcement why you used a knife...a Spyderco does not assume you're out to stab someone.

When you need a knife...you need a knife. I used mine in Viet Nam twice...never since and I hope never again.

For non lethal use...I use a knife almost every day.

If you want defense...as you said, get a CCW.

+1 on concealed carry of a handgun for defense. The knife defense issue had been hit on during this thread and probably by me but I'm not going back looking for it.

Lets keep the thread on the actual topic folks. This trolling is getting very old.

Just had another undeserved attack on another knife forum here... was being nice to someone about a photo of a wound on their head..and was treated like total crap. (SMH) I am human, and I have thick skin but can't deny that it's not hurtful to be attacked constantly on a forum where you want to have fun with people about a similar interest you share...and when you have done nothing to anyone but be kind. I guess I am a bad person because I am female and have a job online. Ridiculous. People won't even let me talk about knives here! They constantly divert, distract, and attack.

Seriously? Come off it. I just spent the last 3 hours reading about the going ons here in the last day or so (and I am not talking about your posts here).

Karda's warning applies to everyone, including you.

You wanna talk knives? Why not list the 14 you bought. Seriously. I am interested.

Blade girl, the culture of this forum is very particular about people "over posting" or attracting a lot of attention. You'll understand that better over time.

That said, some people have really gotten to caught up with this. That's their problem. There are other people who like you here as well. You have a strong personality and I guess that threatens some people. Other people get trolled when they join and "make a splash" too. It will pass in time and all the good parts of blade forums will be here.

In summary, I think you should stick around. You will understand bf culture over time...for example, girls don't post selfies much here. Lol, I'm sure you get that now. Sorry to post off topic, but keep your head up girl.

Funny thing is, the guys trolling you always post chicks and oggle them.(edit: OK, I do too, but still) A chick comes to their forum and posts a selfie and they troll her...too intimidating when the woman can talk fellas? Couldn't take the pressure?

They'll get over it eventually and move on to the next person. Sorry for your crappy start to blade forums.

And it would only be preferential treatment if I didn't tell you to read more and post less blade girl. Seriously. That's the advice EVERYBODY gets when they're new here. It takes some time to get how this place works for some reason. Oh yeah, cuz we're all f'in crazy!

Though I haven't read through this thread and am not sure what the drama is about, I do agree that women who show interest in this hobby should be encouraged. When my wife and I were dating prior to being married, she saw I was interested in knives and proudly showed me a dragon-handled novelty knife her dad gave her (because she collected dragons). She also showed me a Chinese-made swiss army knife knockoff she kept in her car glove box for emergencies. Needles to say, over her next birthday and Christmas I got her a Spyderco Dragonfly engraved with her name and a Victorinox Classic for her key chain. 15 years later she still carries both with her wherever she goes and has commented many times how usefull they are. Oh yeah, she also clips a Cold Steel large Voyager to her waistband when she goes on walks. However, that knife is technically mine.....: ).

Post edited as I would rather not get entangled in something I don't even care to read a thread about. upon reflection that might be good criteria for whether or not to even respond to threads...

I will leave this part of my original post as it can be helpful to anyone new to a forum and genuinely interested in helping create a positive community online:

One thing I've learned from having spent the last 15-16 years of my life on various web forums: there is great benefit in lurking for a while and reading as much as possible in whatever new forums you join. Besides all the knowledge to be had, this is a great way to feel out the general "climate" of a given web community and learn how to manage (and better yet, avoid) being trolled or receiving otherwise negative response.

It's not the over posting that is annoying so many people. It's that much of what is said lacks any real substance as to what is going on, knife wise.

I hang out in the Traditional Forum a lot. Bladegirl quoted a post that was pictures of knives I own, along with 5 or so other members pictures in a row, commenting about nearly buying knives in those photos ('from Amazon or somewhere' she doesn't remember....) which I know for a fact are sought after and not readily available. It strikes me as phony and obviously it strikes other members as phony.

I seriously try to help out other knife aficionados as much as I can, but after reading post after post after post of constant battling with other members, combined with vague statements of 'I just bought a Case knife', but nothing to say what model, what covers, etc., I just see fake all over. Seriously..... this forum is littered with folks lusting after a VERY specific knife and all we see is just a generic well known brand name with no model #.

I love Bladeforums and I really hope I am not banned for posting this, but I do feel that many members feel this way. I hope that the mods can see that I am not trying to troll this thread, but to provide an explanation of why the trolls are popping up everywhere.

Bladegirl, if you truly are interested in knives, SD, etc., then please chill out and do some reading here. To many of us, it doesn't matter what your gender is. Pretty much all of the topics you have inquired upon have been covered extensively over the years. Also, PLEASE, post the exact models of knives that you ordered. This will guarantee to us skeptics that you are the real deal.

I don't think you've said anything bannable. Just some good advice to a newcomer.

I am guessing whatever knives you had in those photos (haven't seen the thread) are ones I'd love to own. I really need to pull the trigger on a GEC. Any GEC really.

It was politely touched on by page 2, sir.

Welcome Lyn...I'm familiar with your work from another forum; that out of the way, and to keep it on topic, only my youngest daughter carries a folder for what she believes is protection, and only because she's not old enough to carry a handgun as do her older sisters.

You won't be sorry with a GEC. In the traditional knife world I would put them on the same level as CRK. They blur the line with custom and they have awesome CS! The only problem is that they are addictive!

Having knife for self-defense is not cool if one doesn't know how to use it. Applies equally to both sexes. Additionally, I encourage getting all colors, not just pink - a classic gender stereotype in the US. :-)

My wife regularly carries a SAK, and daughter has taken interest in knives. Daughter presently trains with a Delica trainer, and is learning the basics of sharp edges and single handed opening. She's 8. The SAK has been an invaluable tool many times, when all women around were fumbling for something sharp to cut with, and my wife smartly used her SAK.

GEC is good stuff. The Northwoods GECs are excellent. My most recent one is the 2-blade Madison Barlow. Love it. It is a fairly large slip joint and as a result, may not be for everyone.
