World War I Navy Issue Knife

[non BF dealer] got a shipment of 25 of the damascus bladed ones in today... Just got off the phone with them with my order.

Get am while there hot! [price removed.]

That's much less than what they usually sell their knives for. I guess not having the fancy display boxes or other accessories kept the cost down. Does anybody know what type of Damascus this is? Looking at the manufacturing images it looked like the pattern was only on the exposed part of the blade. Maybe it had something to do with the images or buffing...

I'm new to pocket knives, but I thought you got those buttons in every GEC. I called my vendor and asked why didn't I get a least one button? I'm learning more about the nuances of these knives everyday.

Sadly, I've received more knives without buttons than with. I was pretty surprised to see this one! I think there may be a dealer or two that sells the buttons alone. Wouldn't hurt to ask around.

I think red is my favorite!

On the bail, does the pin go all the way through, or are there short pins to just the liner? I don't have an old or new version to reference!

The bail pin goes all the way through on this one. I don't have any of the beer scouts but I think those were removable but this one certainly isn't. It also appears to be quite a bit larger. The only other GEC I have with a bail is a #68. Although that's a smaller knife, proportionally speaking, the Navy Knife's bail is much more substantial. I like it!

Ok, let me clarify. These knives being offered today are not the ones from the ship. Those knives will have a shield and their Damascus will be part of the Elssia. These are not available yet.

These knives that are being offered are Damascus made by a man and not from the ship. The wood being used is Teak from a boat or ship and it's the same wood on both knives.

You may want to edit your post..... prices and where to buy aren't supposed to be part of the public discussion here!

The Damascus is Devin Thomas Raindrop.
Buttons are the exception in GECs. I occasionally have one made for an order, but more often, I do not. I started doing one for every knife, but there was little interest so I stopped.

Okay, not really. :D

But I do love the buttons, and it's like Cracker Jack joy all over again every time one falls out of a first-time-opened knife tube.

I agree - I really like the buttons- but they must add to the expense if done in smaller numbers, and the knives arent sold for huge dollars.

Thank for bringing those back! Those two knives by Ken are phenomenal.

I do too P! They go nicely on a Jean Jacket pocket flap :D

Thanks for the Damascus maker, I would have felt stupid asking Percy again.

More buttons! It's hard to believe there wasn't that much interest in them. Honestly, I don't know what I'll do with the one I own, but it's super cool, IMO.
I look forward to procuring my first SFO from your purposeful designs.

Tim, I thought I was the only one who had that idea! I have my New Day one on my jacket. :)

Were you guys teenagers in the late 80's or early 90's, because that was the thing to do to your jacket back then. I still have most of mine. I've been waiting to see someone in the wild wearing a knife button on their jacket.

I was a teenager in the late 60s and 70s. We decorated our jackets a lot then. Then I went into the Army and they had decorations for our jackets, too. :D

Haha I was born in the early 90's sadly. Been looking for a decent knife lapel button. Maybe a buck.

I keep a Krein Knives one on mine :)

That's a very nice looking Red Micarta Steve. I agree with you, thanks to Charlie for bringing such patterns back to light.

Long straight-sided shields were often added to provide a place for engraving. "Banner" is just a convenient term.
It's strange that there is a pile-side shield visible on Great Eastern's site!

Charlie, when I was at GEC last week I spoke with the gal putting the shields on the knife. She said this version had a shield on both sides.

Further info on Percy's Damascus knives:
The ones with the shields indeed have two, one for a name, and one for a person's service number!
The steel is from the designated ship on the two-shield knives only, and they come with a presentation box. Nice present for a Veteran Sailor!
