Would it be dishonest?

Dude it's not REI fault. You're passing the blame. You should've returned it immediately. You can find loopholes all you want. It's wrong and unethical. You would be so pissed if someone did this to you. Now people are not going to sell you stuff on here.

I'm sure if he tries long enough, he will come up with even more excuses.

I shop at REI and the garage sales they do about once a month or so and that's where the best deals come from. If he were to return it based on the dissatisfaction, they would place it in their garage sale.

I would bet they would have it at a price range at around 30-40 dollars. That grip would be added to all the other ones I have as a user.

It is not the brand, but more so the retailers fault. I love my leatherman, I love my Masters Of Defense knives, I love my spyderco, I love my SAK's. I have bought all listed and have had no problems with them. That is because they are quality pieces, and have come from good sellers. I don't really blame REI too much even though I feel cheated, you can't check every nook and cranny of a knife like a collector can... the employees got stuff to do. I just wan't my money back, plain and simple. Things like this WILL happen when you decide to run your company in this manner. I am decided about this. And I regret posting this question.

REI gave you a year to decide--unconditionally. You decided. Keep buying from them, that's a 'warranty' most would jump at if it were a knife at the right price.

Just return the knife and don't look back.

Non illegitimi carborundum.

You're on Blade Forums..a place to sell blades. Sell it with good intent, describe it honestly, and cut your losses. I've blown too much money on knives that don't necessarily "speak" to me. It's just part of the cycle man and I feel that returning it - coupled with the fact that you are feeling guilty about doing so- isn't the best way to handle it.

You seriously believe anyone here is going to conduct a transaction with him at after this?!?

I do appreciate the public service announcement, though. Good to know who not to trust in advance.

That's exactly what I was about to tell him.
He comes to ask, most all tell him its wrong, and he still plans on taking it back. That's nuts.
I know I wouldn't sell to someone that may want a refund because they've decided they no longer like the model after they've already used it.

REI has a very good return program. You have one year to return ANY NEW ITEM you buy from them. It can be returned for any reason. Great store. Great service. I bought my first used Grip from them for $20 bucks. The used gear is marked so it can't be returned.

You're honest about your reasons. But to return it would be unethical and unsavoury.

Yes, it is dishonest. You know it is. You used it for a year - you got $100 use out of it. Just buy a new knife.

It is my opinion that returning the knife is shady as ----
REI used to have a life time guarantee but had to change that to one year because people would abuse their very generous return policy. It is because people do BS like this that others have to suffer.

Someone should link this thread to REI customer service as a be on the look out for.... B.S. Like this is why many retailers are going to a no return policy on knives.

A factory defect is one thing, not liking a knife purchase is another. Both are usually discovered rather early on into ownership, not a freaking year later.

Op this lil ploy is you out right scamming the company, and I hope they tell you to piss off when you bring a year old used knife in trying to get a refund.

I agree with those who say it would be more honest if you sold the knife. I sure as hell would not want to buy a knife "new" that somebody else owned and used for a year. Just like I wouldn't want a "new" pair of shoes from a store that some guy had kept for a year and worn 'from time to time'. You're expecting the dealer to eat the cost of your indecision. Even if they were willing to honor it, I don't think it would be fair or right at all.

Jim

REI is not going to sell returns as "new." Usually, retailers have an agreement that they will return "returns" back to the manufacturer for credit.
