Your Favorites of 2008?

Kevin,
Yup, the same one. I took that pic before sending it off to the
Netherlands. It's not a great pic, I know. He'll take better
ones for sure.

Russ, is that the sub-hilt I saw at Blade?
Where did it end up?

1) Yep.
2) In the hands of someone who had better darn well get done photographing it in time for the Best Bowie 2008 poll.

Phil - love that recurve fighter.

Kyle - I can't tell when last I saw a maker progress with such astonishing speed. Terrific work.

Roger

Kyle Royer,

That Feather Frame Hunter's pattern on your Damascus is memorizing. Great job and some beautiful knives!

This piece I think was my favorite, in terms of concept and design. When we decided to do a collaberation, David Broadwell gave me an outline of a knife design he had drawn up and asked what I thought of a space chick theme, of coarse I thought that would be cool, being there is no creative limit, I worked on the designs off and on for about two months, every so often I would have a new idea, so I would pull out the drawing and change them, over and over, right up to the point, it was time to actually cut the knife. Even while cutting the knife, I kept having new ideas, but once engraving starts you have to stick to the plan, so they are ideas for the future.
Even though in the end, David and I knew this knife was not for everyone, we felt it was a true collaberation of artists (maker&engraver) each pushing their own creativeness and imagination to see what could be created. We were both happy with the result and enjoyed the project from start to finish.

I have not spend much time showing too many knives this year but have posted to CKCA 5 knife show reviews and have submitted some knives in other threads and still have some knives which hopefully will be delivered in 2008. However, here goes ones currently on display and obtained in 2008 either from a maker, collector or dealer.

At Blade 2008 from WC "Bill" Johnson added to a small collection of Chute knives is this one with Desert Ironwood scaled and high polished ATS34.

orig.jpg

also from Blade 2008, a gents Bowie by Daniel Warren, JS from 1084 with Giraffe Bone scales and copper/SS fittings

orig.jpg

from a dealer a dagger by longtime maker Jim Sornberger with Pink Ivory Wood, Lapis, Blackwood and NS

orig.jpg

another from Blade 2008 from the Engraver Simon Lytton is this Loveless style mini fighter by Mamoru Sheganu of Japan HMS 67 and stag

orig.jpg

Off Ebay a nice little Doctors knife with tiger coral scales by Mike Alsdorf

orig.jpg

another collector had this wonderful Ron Best skinner which is Ron's first carved knife and is engraved by Jere Davidson and I had been wanting one of this makers knives for some time. Ron is well known and has won the last two Cronk Awards at the Knifemakers Guild show.

orig.jpg

Stan Wilson is a very fine knifemaker and he had this unusual piece at Blade 2008 which I could not turn down. Integral Eggerling damascus blade with mosaic scales

orig.jpg

long time knifemaker and friend, TM Dowell make this one some time back which I was able to pry from another collectors fingers. Integral Hunter which is the trademark of TMD with Kingwood scales

orig.jpg

Swiss knifemaker Charles Roulin is a well known European maker doing some wonderful work with carvings like this small hunter with Ram and Snakewood scales and terrific filework

orig.jpg

This one will be recognized as part of the many "My Knife" pieces created by D'Holder but also one of very few ever done with damascus. In this case the damascus was created by Chris Peterson. The various spacers include Oosic, Amber (red) and Ivory

to continue with this thread simply because they are all favorites or why would I buy them lol?

A Snakewood skinner by Guillaume Cote of the CKG in D2 from the maker

orig.jpg

from a collector whom you all know comes this fabulous Jason Knight Fighter of 1095 with Ironwood handle, SS/copper fittings

orig.jpg

from the Knifemakers Guild show by Jerry Corbit comes this wonderful folder using Eggerling Damascus, BLB scales and many Rubies on the exterior spine/spacer and thumbstud

orig.jpg

at the AG Russell show in Rogers, AR in mid August comes this bowie from MS Jerry Lairson using W Texas Wind Brier overlay damascus 1095/15N20 with sculptured bronze fittings and stag handle

orig.jpg

another from the Knifemakers Guild show by Jim Elliot comes this unusual Bird/Trout knife with Alligator Jawbone handle and sheath of Alligator and leather

orig.jpg

next are two images of a fixed blade and a folder which are meant to be together as the story is of butterflies that will land on the flowers. Both knives have many inlays in African Blackwood and are the creations of a most extraordinary knifemaker -- Harumi Hirayama of Japan

orig.jpg

orig.jpg

Harumi is fun to chat with and produces some of the most incredible artwork called "knife" that can be found by all the makers of the world.

from Knifemaker Karl Anderson at the Troy Ohio HammerIn comes this W1 Fighters with Australian Sheoak handle

orig.jpg

Although Kyle has posted his brothers version of this knife, because I am the owner, it is worth presenting again -- the Kyle Royer Micro Fighter with fabulous Cracalure Mammoth scales and framed handle and fancy filework

orig.jpg

I have admired the work of Ricardo Velarde for many years and although I had a change to get a very nice piece when I visited his home, it was not quite what I was after. this one was a display at the Knifemakers Guild show by a collector who contacted me later to get my interest -- hmm, not hard to do so it has a nice new home sitting next to the TMD hunter. This is integral BG 42 and Australian Red Mallee Burl

orig.jpg

when others that have been done and are either soon to be delivered or in transit arrive and are photographed I'll add them to this thread.
While knife collecting has been great this year, I'm glad it came in the first 8 1/2 months.

Man there are a lot of cool knives so far in this thread. These are my favorite acquisitions of this year (in alphabetical order).

Murry,
That is an incredible year you have had in 2008! Your knives cover a diverse range of styles and all are exceptional.

Thanks for posting them,
Peter

Marcel - I just adore that little Bartrug hunter, and Josh's piece may well rank in my top 10. Of all time.

Murray's collection is phenomenal - I am fortunate to be able to visit it (and Murray and Phyllis, of course) quite frequently. That Lairson bowie really does it for me. It's not really "my" kind of knife overall, but every time I see it I pick it up and have a hard time putting it down. The shimmer in the damascus is something else.

Harumi's knives are just off the charts. Way off. Just, like, WOW, man.

delander - that is an awesome collection. I hope you have some kind of custom display case for that terrific group.

Roger, I totally agree with you. Her knives have a certain quality about them that is hard to describe. One day I sure hope to own one of her knives. Hopefully something like her Dragon Fighter (the one in Art of the Knife page 6&7):cool:

Roger, that Bartrug is the cheapest in the bunch, far from "perfect" but has also that special quality. It has very special meaning to me and will never be sold.

Marcel

holy crap, Murray! Nice work:thumbup:

the Lairson really jumped out at me too.

Murray,

That's a great array of knives. I really like the Dan Warren knife.

Marcel,

I think that you are also having an exceptional year of knife collecting.

Roger,

Here is my built-in wall display where the D'Holder Animal set is the top shelf left group of knives.

standard.jpg

And, here is a closer shot of the D'Holder Animal Set. You can see that the two 'Outer" knives are Mammoth Ivory Bark, with the balance of the set being Mammoth Ivory. Sort of a 'tusk' effect.
