Knice knives. I love the smooth white bone on those 14's.

I've considered buying one and sending it away for some scrimshaw work.

Just got my first Northwoods in the mail today. It's a cocobolo Fremont jack and I'm completely blown away with the fit and finish. I just recently got into traditional knives and I'm glad I have too.

I've been wanting a tortoise shell and this one is very satisfying. It's going in the pocket today. A little slimmer than either of my other #15's and just enough "beauty" marks to allow it to be carried without worry.

I've been in the knife doldrums, wanting to buy one but unable to work up the enthusiasm.
This one excited me. It's a Case 6185, a doctor's knife with no spatula and no heavy, sharp, pill-busting bolster. I didn't even know they made it in a barehead.
Made in 1974, one of my better years, and pretty much just what I've been wanting.

To give you an idea what I'm talking about, there are pictures of the two knives in the "Whatcha got on order?" thread. They're not pictures of the actual knives I received, but still. I haven't had the time to take pictures yet and as you might have noticed from my other photos, my phone has a rather lousy camera ...

I returned to my college flat today and found a package waiting for me. I expected it only the coming week, I guess the DHL works weekends as well. The label on the front said Friedrich Olbertz, so I knew it can't be anything else but the Carl Schlieper stag toothpick and jigged bone half congress I ordered. Full of excitement I dropped everything I was carrying and rushed to my desk to open the package. There they were, in two little boxes. Now that I've calmed down a bit, I can say that they're... ...quite nice... ...from the far. Honestly, I'm disapointed. The congress has one pin sticking out 1 mm, like a mushroom. Fit'n'finish on both is rough around the edges, to say the least. Gaps along the springs and liners, the back of the tang on the congress master blade is sticking out when open. I'll have to hammer a bit on the pins of the toothpick, the spring of which comes quite close to a joke really. The stag scales have gaps to the bottom bolsters on both sides and the spring isn't flush when the blade is open. AFAIK Case isn't known for putting a great factory edge on their blades, but heck, my peanut is sharper than both knives and I haven't sharpened it in the three weeks I have it. In general my peanut is far from being perfect, yet it's finished way better than these two. For the money I paid I expected more, but here we are now.

On the bright side, if there's one, the stag is well matched (still nothing special). The transition bone to bolster isreally good and the shields have no gaps around them, they're better than on my peanut. Thinking about what else positive I could say, can't really find much ... I got the last toothpick, so it could be much worse, I suppose? I like the matchstikes and the jigging. Despite all the flaws I believe they'll make good users and I'll grow fond of them. I will releive "old trusty", my peanut, from EDC a bit and give the newcomers a try during the week. The company lost my trust though ...

Here are a couple of Rough Rider canoes that I ordered back on Labor Day, but I don't think I've posted them here yet. After this post, they'll officially be "new additions" to my knife holdings! :D

A glow-in-the-dark RR canoe:

A RR "Diamond Jim" series canoe that's supposed to have black smooth bone covers, but the dye job leaves something to be desired (as do my pics :o):

Safari Series Hunter SAK...found this at an antique shop on way to a trip to Northern AZ.
108mm or 4 1/4" . I'm liking it as it has a bottle opener, screwdriver, saw and corkscrew. Along with a nice spear blade it has a gutting blade...slight curve, very sharp but a blunt tip.

Congratulations Colin. I've only seen glowing reviews of the Grinling Whittler. I hope you enjoy it!
