Well. A lot has gone on in this thread and I now have the opportunity to say something:
Today I received a Cashier's Check From Mike Stewart for $16,000. I have already deposited it in the bank and don't expect there to be any problems with it clearing.
I'd now like to respond to some things that have been happening on this thread:
JTR357: It is outrageous that you accused me of making personal attacks on Mike Stewart. A personal attack would be something like name calling, or making allegations against someone's character without evidence. I stuck to the facts, had documentation on everything I stated and made that evidence available to anyone who wanted to review it. You owe me an apology.
I'd also like to point out that several people on this thread DID make personal attacks. Calling someone a slimeball, accusing them of theft without evidence and other schoolyard tactics do nothing for the credibility of the person who engages in that sort of behavior. In fact, it is my opinion that engaging in such behavior, particularly on the internet, is indicative of a lack of character.
In this case, it lowers you to the level that Mike and Reid took on the KnifeForums thread-- in which Mike called me unstable and Reid posted a picture of a clown, obviously referring to me.
To those who said the "Court of Public Opinion" was not the way to handle this: you were wrong. I was able to recover my money in less than two weeks. Litigation would have cost me about 30% of the money and would have taken months. Not only that, but the knife community would not have had the opportunity to get a Bird's Eye view of how Bark River and Mike Stewart conduct business.
Finally, I want everyone here to understand that I still believe Mr. Stewart breached a legal contract. In fact, given that he missed two delivery dates and then tried to blame it on me, I find his business practices to be abhorrent. That, however, was not what brought these hot coals down on his head. If he would have told me that he needed two weeks to refund my money, I would have agreed to that; two weeks time is reasonable for a business to process a refund this large. Instead, he chose not to commit to a date and then attempted to justify it with an arrogance that I simply could not tolerate.
Only by publishing the facts (and only the facts) was I able to force him into committing to a date. Only by using the leverage of public opinion was I able to force him to do what was right. Whether you decide to do business with him in the future or not, is up to you. I would only encourage you to make that decision based on VERIFIABLE FACTS and DOCUMENTATION-- not based on unsubstantiated nonsense on an internet forum.
I really tried to behave in an honorable manner regarding this entire issue. I am sorry that some people (both for and against Mike Stewart) did not.
And now folks, I'm taking a small vacation from the knife world. I'll probably be back and I might even have more to say on this in the future. However for now I think we should all let the dust clear for a few weeks.
