Yep, you DO see THREE types of steel...

I cleaned up the holes in two of the 1084 ones since they're cheap to screw up - but things are looking pretty good.

Are you using any type of hidden pins or just epoxy? What type of epoxy are you using as well?

Looking great bud!

Thanks worldwood. The walnut pictured is just the rough cut scales prior to drilling for .125" nickel/silver pins and carving to final shape. I use Devcon epoxy.

Hey daizee, Those kiridashi blades made by you and others have really struck home with me. Your knife design and work are very elegant. Craftsmen such as you, Todd Hunt, James Terrio, Nick Wheeler create the benchmark of design and execution we all strive to attain.
I urge everyone to view and review the work of these masters

I'm not worthy!
(but thank you!)

Hawkhead,

Love those knives man. Such great work! Glad to see some of your work in progress knives getting finished!

Can't wait to see the rest of them.

Tomorrow or the next day I'll be cleaning up/regrinding Alex's 15. If I remember, I'll take some before-and-after pics to share here :)

Hawkhead, those 16 mods look GREAT. WW, looking like you're making good progress!

I need to make some time to get back in my shop. I have so many projects that need finishing. I got kinda sidetracked building a 308 AR there for a while... Got a sword, machete, and a bunch of smaller blades that need finishing. I should probably also finish up the BK6 blank I have sitting around.

Yeah, everything is fine. Just been quite busy with some new stuff,, such as taking some Krav Maga classes, building a 308 AR, traveling with the wife, and lots of work with my other job. I'm so close to being done with this AR build that I can taste it... bolt arrives at the barrel manufacturer for headspacing on Thursday. I think I'll have the last of the other parts in by the time that gets back to me. Once I'm done with that, I'm planning on getting back in the shop to finish up some blades, including a BK6. Not sure if I'm going to keep that one or not. You have anything else in the works?

Sounds like fun! Busy, but fun!!

Im working on a couple 3 finger knives, need to build a curing box so my wood handles will actually set right, and i got a buddy who wants a slicer but im still waiting to receive his drawing of that one. And waiting to get the mini hawks back from Peters so i can get them to their owners. Fun fun!!

First mid-tech birudashi prototypes done!!
I like how this process is going so far.

These are 1084, which I can heat-treat easily in my own shop. These are probably the last that will roll off the line before I move my shop 5min across town. I accidentally left a thumbprint in the surface oil of the large one before putting it in the forge, and now its burned into the steel. Guess I'll have to keep that one. Darn. :D

Next time someone asks if it's a good idea to buy a Harbor Freight 1x30" belt sander for making knives, I'm going to post this picture:

LOL funny picture. So you got a huge one and a mini one???

What do you really use?

The mini is a normal HF - bought for Hefty Lefty's shop for the ability to reach into some tight spots with the skinny belt with clearance behind and to dress sharp corners of 'dashi and the like.

The Big'Un is Hefty Lefty's variable speed (rebuilt motor, VFD added) 4x54" Port Cable War Finish industrial belt grinder that she completely restored. She built the large table for it, stripped and painted, new bearings, etc. Oh yeah, glass-fronted platen too. It's a 'dashi-making monster, and also lets her handle big pieces of stock for furniture. I get to grind on it sometimes. :D

Don't tell my wife! Not quite done yet but almost. A small paring knife I will give her for Christmas. The handle is bear bone with two Cocobolo collars and the blade is convex ground 1084.
