When I was in 7th grade, my family took a trip to eastern Montana. A college buddy of my father lived in Montana, and they entered a fishing tournament out there. He brought us a bunch of fresh elk venison he and his wife killed. Jerky, steak, burgers, sticks, the works. They would come visit occasionally and also mail us deer, elk, etc.

He and his wife embody the Hank Williams Jr song "Country boy can survive."

He saw a dead mountain lion on the side of the road, called his wife from work (pre-cell phones) and told her to show the kids. She decapped it, and took the claws. Boiled and bleached the skull, mounted it above the garage, and made necklaces out of the claws.

I've never been hunting. Doubtful I'll ever get to go with my health.

Probably steak for dinner Sunday. We've got some nice strips in the freezer.
