Buck's Kustom Knife Shop IS still OPEN!

I think Dave and Blades, in the last two posts, have pretty well summed things up. It doesn't appear to me that anyone posting here would have had difficulty with a moderate price increase that was placed into effect subsequent to notification by the powers to be on the mountain. The problem that I see is what seems to most of us to be a truly exorbitant increase instituted with the on-line re-opening of the Custom Shoppe, after many of us had been waiting for months for this to occur in order to place a order and then without any notification (although that certainly is not required on their part to do so) as well. Numerous posters have indicated that they saw this coming, but I doubt that anyone in their wildest dreams truly saw an increase of this magnitude. So, as a result, it would appear that Buck has lost, as least to some degree, a certain amount of "customer loyalty" and that is one of any business companies major assests, although it is difficult to put a dollar value on this good will. Just ask the folks at Cadillac as they frequently give customer loyalty incentives on new vehicles to previous owners just to keep them coming back. Customer Loyalty - for all the things (read Custom Shoppe knives here) your Master Card can't buy!! I'm done with this thread!!

How sad...this is ture; I actually found myself asking a brother about his Cold Steel Ti folder then I did a search for one.
This will be my first non-Buck purchase since a few months before finding this forum.

Like Tin Sue, I'm thinking I am done with this particular thread...I've beat it to death. It is what it is.

I just think the mad race to produce zillions of sturdy but low-cost knives is unsustainable and crazy.

It's the "hamster on a treadmill" syndrome with a hamster that has to go faster and faster and eat less and less. That will kill the hamster.

There will have to be diversification and downsizing. Employee numbers will shrink.

The basic line sold in Wal-mart plastic could get a new name and be produced offshore. Real Bucks would be sold at a premium price and in real boxes and be sold increasingly to an emerging world market in other nations.

I see the Custom Shoppe moving toward even more costly materials and more REAL engraving to start selling Customs for prices in the thousands of dollars. The fact that aftermarket artisans have had success with this niche proves it does exist and the knives done totally by Buck would have more appeal than knives pimped-up after they leave the Buck shop.

Custom knife availability would expand and allow you to order ANY knife ANY way you want it. No restrictions except the high prices you would expect for such service.

They could even bring back a "Classic" series of handmade 440C knives that are identical to the first 110s from the sixties and sell them in a basic model and also models dolled up as much as anyone could imagine......all this in small numbers at exorbitant prices.

More extra high-quality Limited Editions in exotic and beautiful materials would also be forthcoming, also sold to an increasing world-wide market. The knife as both functional and art is the new market and the knife as art will take an increasing share.

Meanwhile, the standard and basic line of American-made knives would gradually become more expensive and less available. Rather than a zillion encased in plastic at Wal-Mart......we'd see shortages, backorders and people waiting to get these fine knives in the old-fashioned sturdy cardboard boxes.

The future may be a little like the past in certain ways.

So the vibe I'm getting here is that maybe Buck is changing it's business strategy and does it shake your faith in its stability? I think in this unstable world people like stability and this shakes it a little or am I totally wrong. I for one buy the product but also the company ethic.

I agree - my previous custom shop goodies were, indeed, bargains. The BG-42 seems to be gone - 154CM isn't a bad choice - but, wow, what price increases. I guess the fg water buff/NS/BG-42 I wanted is a pipe dream. ~$60 MORE - for 154cm - and no sheath. I guess I'll pass on that. I don't feel quite so bad for the annual 'collector tin carnage' at Wally World. Good grief!

Like others, I have other 'sharp' interests, too. Bark River makes some nice fb knives - closest I'll get to 'custom' pieces now. Kershaw, Spyderco, etc, offer some nice folders, too. US-made, too (Heck, the Spydie I have even says 'Golden, CO, Earth' on it!).

I guess it makes the specialty, ie, Cabela's & Bass Pro, 110s that much more desireable... and cost-effective!

Hey, I still love my '08 'Gen5' knives - there are more new goodies from Buck I'll want - and try to get... I bet the Custom Shoppe will be less busy this summer, however!

Sorry - sticker shock... I was prepared for the gas prices...

John

PS I agree with Roc re the 419 - and 408 - how can they sell them for that? Heck, my 005RWS was a deal, too... and from a new dealer ("I'll be back!"). Hey, for what my six BR knives cost this winter, I could now order a Damascus/Sambar Stag 110 - no sheath, though (The BRs came with nice sheaths...)!

I didn't even notice about the charge for a leather sheath!!!

Surpised that the rivets are still "$0". Wait for the website to be updated since someone is accounting must've missed that one.

OK, I'll shut up now...
.

The Cabela's AG 110 in stag and s30v is looking like a bargain now at $154.95 as opposed to almost $400 for the Custom ordered one.

The AG stag, BTW is a limited edition of 500 in case we forgot. My Cabela's has two.

However, I'm not sure if that stag in the AG110 is the same Sambar Stag that is now so expensive.

I'm thinking my next custom will be a 154CM Rams Horn FG Cordura sheath.....for about $225.

Looks like it would take $576 to make it happen.

I won't even check on Paua (shudder).

Oh.....only $1228.

Never like Paua anyhow.........lucky thing.

well i miss mop but the paua is not bad but seems expensive for a composit .

i noted some of you guys seem to be saying you are giveing up...
DONT GIVE UP! keep thoes cards and letters comeing...
if buck thinks there they have lost their the custom CUSTOMER BASE. then why
should they even worry on it?
why not jest roll it over in to the grave of discontuned knives!
we know that here they do read what we say...
Sarah was reading for almost 20 min this past weekend...
so letting them know you are not happy is one thing ...
and to say that if you are contunely un-happy that you might
go were you will be happy is also OK...
but to say ... well i am done and gone .. that says you have no fath in them any more..
so why should they worry ...
i jest Know from conversation in the past that they will discuss what is said here...
and from there go on ... so if you are telling them that fine i am gone you are sending a letter from your lawyer for a divorce ..
so instead lets go for a meeting of the hearts and minds here... you say what you feel and might end up doing if things dont change and they can act on it...
but dont jest give up on the relationship...
it COULD turn out even better from this!

perhapps in reading they will rethink and see what can be done...
after all no one wants to loose a friend...
which by the way 'trax have ya checked my friend list?..
i gots more then i thoughts! i is rich indeed!

For $576, I can buy a nice Colt 45 and a sweet China knife... ... Did I say China knife??? :barf:... Yikes! ! !

Well Dave, like Goose, you have talked me into one more response and then I too will shut up. I personally have never said I was leaving; too many great guys here and too many great Buck knives yet to be had even although they are no longer affordable. But the problem is that many of us seem to have bought into this idea, propagated by the powers that be on the mountain, that we are all part of the "Buck Knife Family" and now that family seems to have stuck a big old 110 blade into us and is twisting it around. Perhaps the letter of divorce did not originate on this end. There, now I'm done again. Or not!!

I can see prices going up....I let my diesel pickup get too low and had to put 32 gals. in this morning $149.12 ....$4.66 gal.:thumbdn::eek:

One station plugged in the wrong numbers on their pumps and had gas and diesel less than a dollar a gallon !....it didn't last long.

Maybe ...hopefully someone plugged in the wrong prices on the web page:p

Dave says...."Sarah was reading."

Really?

Sarah.....hello!!! Listen, we don't want much.

Just high quality beautiful lifetime custom-made knives for the cost of about one tank of gas.

See how reasonable we are?

Waiting to hear from you.

I understand the part about feeling like a family. Not many companies around anymore that have that feeling.
However remember the old saying, "Never do business with family", it usually always leads to bad feelings.....
If nothing else, I hope they don't change their customer service.

yes i know you guys did not call the lawer first...
but it could be some bean pusher got their ear and realy chewed it bloody and some how convenced them that we realy would pay those prices!!!
i have seen anothers from buck reading today...
yep i got nothing better then to watch this forum...
letters DO make a diffreance ...
so i kinda at least would like to ask for bcci consiteration ...
they do DO things for them ...
and if they did cut bcci members only ... a chance say once a mounth or every 60 days to order ONE knife at less then current prices ...
because if they have to shut down and set up for jest 3 or 4 knives it DOES cost!
set up time is NOT free time...

would you order?
would you be willing to wate for it?
i am sure your friends are wateing to hear you may not leave them!!!
