I never had to shovel it
As teenagers, we used to make a fair bit of loot shoveling the stuff. After the street was plowed, we would do the driveways our houses and the old widow ladies (there was a pair of them that we shoveled out for free at our end of the street), we were free to offer services. As long as we could keep a fast enough pace, we didn't get cold. Got paid in cash mostly, sometimes in goods.

For Minnesota:
Stormy Kromer hats
Sorel boots
Chopper mittens (deerskin with wool liners)

You won’t need that stuff every day, but when you do, you will be glad you have it.
Remember, if it’s cold, you can always add another layer. If it’s hot, once you are naked, that is as far as you can go.

Thanks for the recommendations!

I know the Tech engineer that designed the Tom Moreland interchange (Spaghetti Junction) for the DOT, want his number :D

Pfffff. I went to Norcross from Lawrenceville. Almost 3 hours for 34 miles. I wouldn’t brave ITP to OTP or vise vesa, during traffic.

The DOT needs to be worried for our purposed flurries. /sarcasm/pretty true.
Snow is almost a natural catastrophe in ATL and metro ATL. 1 inch of snow and it all basically shuts down.

I also grew up in PA (South of Case, East of Queen/GEC). After 10 years+ of being gone I don't miss the winters or shoveling all the lake-effect snow out of the driveway one bit. I do miss the hunting/fly fishing though...
I always make sure to call the parents up and tell them how nice the weather is in Austin when i see they're getting a bad storm.... today they called me to return the favor when they saw it was snowing here. That's a pretty rare occasion.

I haven't turned on the heater yet, so I just pulled out some more blankets. I've got a devious genius plan. The rats that nested under the house last winter are looking for somewhere nice and warm, and I'm waiting until they settle under the neighbor's house.
It last snowed here in 2011, almost an inch. When I was a little kid, I lived in Pennsylvania. Snow meant fun and sometimes a day off school. I never had to shovel it or drive in it. I predict it will melt off when the sun comes up tomorrow, or the city will shut down for the day. :) Sorry about your plants, though.
A plan is always a good thing my friend .
Stay warm down there .

Harry

A devious plan indeed. Your cat needs lessons from mine...one a night sometimes. She is a killer on the prowl  Yes..I've had the plants for years. I will start again when I heal up . I got the Ficus triangularis my Mom started in :D, so it should be fine. I just went on a walk in the Winter wonderland...beautiful. Now if I can just get the Boots to come in...lol. Stay warm Rachell ;):)
The Cat that we Do Not have , and that I feed every day , keeps a good control on the local Chipmunks and mice around our place . We had some flurries last night and the temp. is down to under 20 F and I consider us lucky for this time of year . Would not mind getting some more snow though .
Stay warm and safe down there Gevo !!!!

A good way to put it. The one we don't have that I feed every morning brings us skulls, trophies from her hunts in the canyon. She lives around the periphery of our property and comes to the door for me to feed her.

We don't have two cats like that, in addition to the 4 cats we do have. We at one point also didn't have a possum that liked the cat food we put out. Only saw it a couple of times. I have nothing against possums and was kind of pleased to see it, though the big tuxedo tom cat was somewhat annoyed that he didn't get to finish his meal in peace.

All this winter weather discussion feels somewhat related to a little announcement I'd like to share. A couple days before Thanksgiving, my wife was offered a promotion at work. We're excited, of course -- she's definitely worked hard towards this -- but the promotion does come with the requirement that we relocate from Arizona to Minnesota. That means trading off extreme summers and mild winters for mild summers and extreme winters. Apparently we aren't destined to live anywhere temperate. :D

It also means that there's a lot to be done over the next few months (on top of the usual busy-holiday-season stuff). We traveled to MN last week for a few days to look for a place to live, but haven't secured anything yet, so that's at the top of the list. We also have to sell our house here in AZ, although it seems like the market is good right now, so hopefully that won't be too difficult.

As a result of all this, I haven't done a great job at keeping up with things on the forum the last few weeks, but I've been trying to pop into some of my favorite threads occasionally and contribute a little here and there.

Here are a couple pictures of Eleanor from our trip last week, checking out some dead leaves (something we don't really have in AZ) and trying on a warm hat. :D

It sounds like you're going to be busy Barrett. Good luck with everything my friend :) Cool pics of Ellie :)

Have you named the cat?

SVTFreak SVTFreak , I know you got some snow up there this morning! Let's see some pics!

My Facebook feed is going nuts right now. Places as close as 30 miles from New Orleans got a really nice amount of snow (for La.). We were just a bit to south to get anything other than a tiny bit of sleet. My aunt in west Louisiana sent this pic this morning. She's claiming she's up to 4" now.

I still haven't decided if I'm going in to work yet. Maybe I'll have a cup of mud first...

Oh we did. About 4” on the ground now and that’s saying a lot cause it’s wet and melting. My baby girl cried when she saw it she was so happy. She’s never even seen snow.

That's fantastic!!! So happy for your girl. I remember a decent dusting in 2005-2006 that had me throwing snowballs at the neighbor's kid. It was the first time I could remember seeing "legit" snow.

The last real snow in my area was December 2008. I was married but no kids and more focused on work than i should have been. It did a little north of Baton Rouge in 2010.

There is something magical about a really good, fresh snowfall of significant depth to give a good covering, especially if you don't have to try to go to work in it, and even more so if you are a kid. The difference in the feel of the air, the change in the sounds of being outside, the smell of it, the sound and feel of walking in it. Certainly more enjoyable if it is a rare treat rather than a constant hassle.

In my area here in the middle south of the US, we are getting our first colder weather of the year, but no precipitation. Nothing really unusual and rather late for the first decent cold. From the forecast, it looks to be short-lived with highs back into the 60s next week.

Yes!
As I was going to bed early last night (I couldn't wait to get under 3 layers of blankets + the cat) I heard my next door neighbor having a snowball fight with his kids. I thought it cool of him to let them out past their bedtimes, since it will pretty much melt off once the sun comes up.

Be careful out there. Even if you know how to drive on ice and snow, nobody else does! (I know I don't  )

ps. I can see my breath inside the house. Don't know how long I can hold out on firing up the furnace. :D

Contrary to reports, it did NOT snow in Georgetown Texas last night. Being a native of the mid Atlantic seaboard, I can tell what real snow is. This morning there was a faint dusting, very faint, of white stuff on the cars left out over night. That dear fellow Texans is a heavy frost. I refuse to glorify it by calling it snow!!!!

After two full years in our new home in Texas, I am still reveling in the love of a climate that makes it un-needed to own either a snow shovel or ice scraper, let alone long underwear and insulated boots!

This morning the sun is out, the temps are coming up, and I'm going shooting. On an outdoor range. :)
