"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Kinda same thing in south Louisiana. It’s more of a slushing than a snowing. I like the once in 10 years slushfall lol. I’m just glad I got to see my baby girl see it her first time.

What a treat to wake up to snow, if only in picture form in the lounge. Thanks for sharing, everyone.

No snow here in the San Francisco Bay Area, although there is a touch of frost on some of the the roofs in my neighborhood this morning.

My wife and I decided to drive to Buffalo, NY yesterday after lunch to see some of her relatives and do some Christmas shopping. The weather here was fine, and the forecast for Buffalo was fine. However, about halfway in-between we went through a heavy lake effect snow band, and had to get off the interstate and navigate down every side road and berm we could find. We were driving through about 10 inches of unplowed heavy snow. We saw a few accidents, and dozens and dozens of stuck vehicles, and our normally 2 hour trip took closer to 4. But we made it. The return trip back home was equally miserable.

Oh we did. About 4” on the ground now and that’s saying a lot cause it’s wet and melting. My baby girl cried when she saw it she was so happy. She’s never even seen snow.

Very cool! Glad she got to enjoy a little snow (which I'd have to imagine is quite rare in your neck of the woods). We lived in Little Rock, AR until I was 8 years old, and I'm pretty sure it only ever snowed once, and it was so little that it didn't even cover the grass. Didn't stop me from playing in it, though. :D

Weather surprises are never fun when you're traveling. Two years ago, my wife and I drove from Arizona back home to Northwest Arkansas for Christmas. We had no issues on the way there, taking the normal route, which is basically I-40 from AZ all the way to Tulsa. The forecast didn't look good at all for the trip back, so we decided to take the slightly longer, more southern route through Dallas, down to El Paso, across the southern part of New Mexico and up through Tucson. Well, the storm we were trying to avoid had that whole area covered, too. It started snowing about 100 miles before El Paso, and by the time we hit New Mexico the roads were essentially a skating rink. We passed several jack-knifed trucks, and eventually got stopped behind a wrecking crew trying to pull one out of the median. Just about the time they had it back on the road, the state troopers showed up, blocked the road and told us the highway was closed until they could clear the ice and snow. So we sat there in the truck for four hours until they finally let us go through. All told, it took us 28 hours to get home -- about 9 hours longer than the normal route.

So today, I decided to go to the bank. No biggie. An exit up the HWY. Before I left the bank, snow happened in GA. I’m in a highly modded CTS-V. I sincerely thought I was gonna die on my Extreme Summer Tires. I have at least 700 ft pd of tq at 2800 rpm to the wheels. In the 20-25 minutes I was in the bank, it snowed over an inch and it’s only getting worse. It’s coming down like rain now and has for most of the afternoon. We have a worse forecast for tonight. That trip took me an hour and a half to go maybe 10 miles.

I hate that I’m so frugal - in this instance - I can’t make myself put some Blizzacks on a spare set of rims for the once or twice a decade it snows for my AWDs. Every car I own has Extreme Summer Tires.

Hope those of you who don’t get snow have a blast.

btb01 btb01 A few years ago in GA, people were trapped on the Interstate for days from what you described.

Wurrwulf Wurrwulf My GF is an Audi fan (she has two) and she daily drives an RS6 wagon. I do drive it from time to time, but meh. She just got it this summer.

What is this thing you call, "snow"?
But, I can tell you lots about fires.
Fires to the South. Fires to the North. None here so far. Fingers crossed.

Those fires look hideous, so much property ruined, trees and natural habits in ashes and terrible eco effect to the animal&bird life. There have been severe fires in Europe in the Med and it seems to be happening more and more often in more and more places.

Spare a thought for Fire Brigades and citizens everywhere on the front line of these fires, real courage not the movie kind:thumbsup:

Destruction is easy, creation not at all. It takes a century for a forest to grow but it can burn down in a night.

All in all, the DOT and the Sun took care of most of the snow. We got over 4 inches, but it melted away. There’s a freeze tonight and for a few more days - blarg.

At least I got to rotating my knives and getting others ready for storage. My 4 wheeler is down and I have no toys to play with in this weather.

My daughter had a plan to haul horses into the Atlanta area this weekend. Glad she gave that one up.

If you've named the cat, and you feed the cat, you have a cat. Just face it now.
I am not and will never be convinced that anyone ever has a cat . They may have a cat in their house , name it , and feed it , but they never own it . The one we do not have has never gotten closer to me or my wife than 4 feet and that is okay with me.

We had a stray for several months, until the weather got bad. She is now an indoor cat, and very appreciative for it.
Similarly, the white cat in my avatar appeared during the "polar vortex" in November 2014 outside of our door. Without going into a very long story, with quite some effort and expense (vet care) she became the 4th indoor cat we have. It took quite a while of slow adjustment, addressing health issues, and building trust, but she is now a very sweet and affectionate cat and is also quite appreciative of her life of luxury, leisure, food, care, and attention.

Yes - the ownership relationship goes the opposite direction. We don't have 4 pet cats. Our 4 cats share the same two human servants.
