I am curious as to whether or not CRKT is going to let the OP know what happened (just because I am a curious guy)

Usually you get a new knife and that's the end of it.

If you do hear anything, update this thread please. Things happen, so I am not looking to beat on CRKT, just interested....

I wish.
We could use the jobs. ;)
We'll gladly make cheap crap and sell it to the rest of the world.

And it's Canada, not canada...

Well said Stabman!!!
Ha, I just about wrote ------ eh!
Forgot where I was for a second!

In this case, Knifecenter actually suggested I take a refund and wait until they have some answers from CKRT to buy another one, which is a fair offer to me. I'm sending the knife back to Knifecenter today, I doubt CRKT will reach out to me personally (they haven't answered the email I send yet) but Knifecenter definitely seems committed to giving us an answer

Only stainless I have had stain like that is ZDP. Somehow a pretzel roll, of all things, gave it an ugly stain on the blade from cutting pieces off. That said, I have cut acidic or mildly corrosive things numerous times with steels less corrosion resistant than S30V without a lick of spotting or staining. I have even had better performance than that from high polish satin D2. You definitely got a bum knife, it looks. I would definitely call the seller and CRKT. Also good for posting this here, a couple more reports like this and CRKT has some explaining to do (one report could be a bum heat treat, even some highly corrosion resistant steels can corrode easily with just the wrong HT).
Pretzel roll? [emoji23]

Glad to read that KnifeCenter is taking care of you, speaks volumes to their customers. I'm interested in hearing what the issue is/was.

Hey, all-
We received the reply from CRKT.
Having personally dealt with this company for 20+ years and knowing the integrity and innovation they have contributed to the knife industry, I am 100% positive this was not an intentional action from them. Their supplier is absolutely the bad actor in this scenario.
This is a very big deal to them, as you can imagine. The measure of a company is how they deal with issues like this.

Here is the statement from CRKT:

"We are aware of the problem with the blade steel.

We’ve taken immediate actions and the weight of the issue is not lost on us.

An independent third party lab test has confirmed that the steel is not S30V. We were disappointed in the outcome of the test and we are currently revisiting not only our relationships, also our own processes.

We have taken the following steps to ensure that history does not repeat itself:

· Re-confirming our supplier certifications.
· Developing an improved Quality Assurance process for all CRKT products.

We care about quality here at Columbia River Knife & Tool and integrity is mission critical to how we have chosen to do business. We recognize that issues like these threaten that core attribute of who we are.

We are working closely with Knife Center to “make it right”.

Thank you for your patience. We continue to appreciate the support we receive from friends and fans, when circumstances arise.

The Knifecenter is requesting the return of each of these knives. We will, of course, pay for all return shipping and issue a full refund. We will contact each customer that purchased one from us.
If you have one, please contact Knifecenter at 800 338 6799 M_F 9-5:30 ET or email us at support@knifecenter.com

The word is they are likely 1075 or 1090 carbon steel. I agree with someone's post that these are great knives with carbon steel as well (although probably not worth the same price), but they are marked S30V and so we will return them all.

So congratulations to Misanthropia and all the knife guys who figured this out! We got it done and it will be resolved. Hopefully to everyone's satisfaction, although I really wanted to carry that knife!

Thanks, everyone, for being helpful and civil

awesome, I would soak that blade in some patterned mustard and get a great patina, adds character

Wow!

Just got back to this...

Great resolution from KC.
I would actually like to see more folders like this in HC steel, I would own more folders!

They should re-stamp this batch when they figure out the steel, and sell them as a special BF run...

Thank you Knifecenter, and also CRKT, for being transparent and prompt in your responses. I hope this thread helped some people out.

It's not s30v
The supplier from china cheated on the steel quality

Wow. Props to you KnifeCenter. Never thought I'd see a vendor be so invested in knives they'd get involved with a issue with a product.
CRKT also props to you for being transparent and being forth coming!

Wow I believe it but imagine the audacity to commit this level of fraud, imagine your going to send out hundreds of knives with the wrong steel and think no one will notice. Very impressive how CRKT is handling this and I have to say it really sucks for them. I hope they really stick it to the lying manufacturer. One thing you have to think about is how worth while it is doing business with a reputable business. Very interesting thread thanks to the OP for sharing this and to Knifecenter for shedding light on what's going on.

This is why I buy knives from actual manufacturers, not just companies who contract out 100% of their production.

You nailed it
Buying a product involves trust. Not many people have the calacity to test the steel on their knives... so you have to trust what the manufacturer says.
This is the reason I buy from reputable manufacturers only and try to avoid made in china knives

I wouldn't want one. CRKT thought this was S30v and probably HTed as such. Unless HT for S30v and 1070 are the same, and something tells me that's not the case, who knows how this would perform.

Major kudos to both Knifecenter and CRKT. I've never been a huge fan of CRKT, but after seeing how quickly they dealt with this, and how transparent they are being, i'm impressed.
I would say I'm impressed with Knifecenter, but frankly, these guys go above and beyond so much that I almost expect it. They really spoil us. They are consistently awesome.
