Fehrman knives

Sodak,

Did you get to try out the Last Chance before picing up your Peacemaker? I was looking at it as well, but I decided that the handle/blade looked a bit too thin. What kind of use does it get from you?

No, unfortunately I have handled the Last Chance, although I've been tempted. I love the Peacemaker, it gets a ton of camp chores when camping, it's very unobtrusive for hiking, yet stout. I used it a little butchering a hog, and splitting small rounds of wood when starting a campfire. Great little knife, yet big enough and strong enough to be the only carry.

The blade profile is almost identical to a Gen 2 Howling Rat from Swamp Rat, another great knife. Aren't choices great?

Anyone know what the wait time is like when you order direct from Ferhman?

I think it depends on the model but I emailed them earlier this week asking for the wait time on the Last Chance and I was told it was approx. one week. Just email them and ask. I received a response within 24hrs.

Yeh, it really depends on what they've got on hnd ready to coat and grind. The first time I was going to order, Eric (great thing abt Fehrman is that when you call, usually you get to speak to the deisgner/owner) told me he had one ready to be coated and ground, and could have it out to me within 5 days. I didn't buy until a month later, however, and when I did, it took around 3 weeks for me to get it. DEFINITELY worth the wait, though.

Oh, I guess I should formally add that I got my LC. : )

However, as Tyrkon prolly knows, I also was able to pick up a Busse BATACLE. Both fantastic knives, though I give the Fehrman the edge in terms of ergos. I don't think anyone will be unhappy with their Fehrman.

On the other hand, if any of you wants kydex for the Last Chance, give me a holler by PM and I'll get one out to you for a competitive price. (I'm probably gonna go with a custom option by Rob Hummelbaugh (thanks to Brian_T for all the great info!).

Good Luck, and Tyrkon, what are you waiting for?!! : D

Hey J,

If you want to shoot Rob H. an email he's got my Last Chance in house right now and he could probably knock something together without you even having to send in your knife. :)

He said it'd fit the Survival Sheath so that's where I headed.

I hope to have a picture in another couple of days.

;)

Just give them a quick call. It all depends on which blanks they've got on hand.

I got a knife from them in just a couple of days because they already had blanks in the shop and ground them, HT'd them, and finished them within a day or two of my call.

Some of the knives they'll have on hand all the time and others like the Extreme Judgment they may have to make up.

B, got an email off to Rob a bit ago. His sheath comes with the clip over the front pocket, right? I'm assuming a Leatherman or somesuch other tool can go into that little pocket on the front. I will prolly hafta order two, since I just recently traded for a BATACLE. Now I'm tryna plan some way to get out into the woods somewhere and put 'em both to use.

J

It does. It's the same sheath as I've got with my Busse Badger in the pics I sent you. :)

He's got them in a few colors too I believe.

I found the front pocket a bit small for my SwissTool but it'll fit a SAK and/or firesteel just fine.

Thanks for the info bro.:)

Brian T...

Please post the pics of the new sheath you are getting for your Last Chance. I just received my Last Chance and took it down the road to Paul Long for a brown leather sheath. I will post pic when it is done this weekend.

Joel

Will do just as soon as I get it back. :)

I'll ask Rob to shoot me a picture or two before he sends back the knives (he got a whole mess of them from me so it'll take him a bit to get all the sheaths done.)

Paul Long was kind enough to send these pictures to me today!

I had him attach a loop for EZE Lap diamond stone.

Looks great!

Joel

Just to add some more. The fit and finish on my Fehrman's are as good as any other maker, Fehrman is not out done. They come very sharp and will hold that edge for a long, long time. If you will look at Ron Hood's forum, there is a lot of discussion on Fehrman knives over there. You have my word, you will love a Fehrman. Their warranty is as good as anyone, they are stand up good people. Give Fehrman a call and talk to them.

New poster to this forum here.

I have been trying to decide for a little while now whether to go with a Busse or Fehrman. I think I've decided on the Fehrman. From talking to different people, and reading up on both, the Fehrman knives seem to have a little better edge retention, though are also a bit harder to resharpen.

Not to knock on Busse at all, I've seen what they can do and are capable of, but there are a couple of things about them that bother me.
First, the length of time it often takes to get one.
Second, their steel has been around for quite some time. Granted, that means its tried and proven, but newer and better steels are developed eventually, regardless of how good they are.
Third, the guarantee that Busse has, seems to have some not so fine print, that might just be a technicality on my paranoid little mind. However, they state "We guarantee against any and all unintentional MAJOR damage forever." They even put "MAJOR" in all caps. I question what defines major damage. I mean, they are expensive knives after all. And I'll be paying that cash out with an expectancy of it not to be chipping, etc. Again, I've seen what these knives can withstand, but there are always exceptions.

On the downside of Fehrman... I recently tried contacting them via email. Email, according to their website, is the preferred method of contact, and supposedly the most likely, as well as quickest method of receiving a response. As of to date, I have never received answers to any of my questions. I find that to be a little disconcerting. Lifetime guarantees don't mean much if you can't get ahold of them.

However, I've heard good things about Eric Fehrman, so maybe I'll try to give them a call. Or maybe I'll just go ahead and order one, and hope for the best.

The other Fehrman advantage is.. slightly cheaper, well, depending on which knife you're looking at.

Yes that's nothing to worry about. But the short of it is if you have a tiny rust spot on your well used 2 year old knife you aren't getting a new one for free.

Haha. Yeah, I think that would be pushing the warranty on anything really. That, by the way is the one reason I'm going to get a coated knife. I plan on it being used heavily outdoors, and while I will try to keep it as dry as possible, its just not possible.
Now was your comment in reference to the Fehrman, the Busse, or both?

I think my main concern now is going to be how long it will take me to get the Fehrman if I order it. Thats 'in part' one reason I shied away from the Busse.

I wanted to take the time to answer this for you, without flames. Hey, maybe someday you'll buy both!!

The length of time issue for Busse depends on where you are ordering from. Yes, if you order from www.bussecombat.com you will want weeks to months. However, if you go to www.bussecompanystore.com there is plenty of INFI in stock that could be in your hands in days. I get stuff from there in a 2 day turn-around. They currently have LE Fusion Battle Mistresses, Variant Steel Hearts, Game Wardens, Sus Scrofas (wharncliff; they have 6!! types available), and Scotch Dispensers in stock.

INFI may not be the newest steel, but it has a few other advantages to CMP3V such as impact resistance (rolling edges instead of chipping), lateral strength, and ease of sharpening. INFI may not beat other steels in one specific area but is designed to be an all-around high performance steel.

As far as their guarantee is concerned, I've seen Jerry offer to resharpen, regrind, rehandle, refinish, and replace blades at no cost if the user wasn't happy. Don't test INFI's resistance to a .50 caliber round to see if they will replace it; but otherwise your blade is guaranteed FOR LIFE.

You won't be dissatisfied with a knife from either company. There are a couple of uber-Hogs who posted in this thread out of interest of the quality and high performance of Fehrman blades. Someday I'd like to get a Fehrman myself -but somehow Jerry managed to get my credit card number...;):D
