GEC #47 Harvester and #74 Cotton Sampler. First 2023 run.

Have there been ebony on drops? I assumed they all went through some sort of back channel.
I don't get all the cagey behavior around where people are getting these but I've yet to see anyone give a straight answer on where the ebony and ODs are coming from. I mean, by the time they are in hand, its not like they are even available anymore, but folks seem to be basking in attempting to induce FOMO in other GEC collectors, lol.

Got my natural cotton sampler today, all I can say is its an odd, odd knife.
It is basically a scalpel I think. You could use it to dip into flat surfaces. Like it would be great for neatly pealing an orange if that were necessary.

Both of these blade types lean toward box openers in the modern world.

Well, no one really wants to give up the golden goose. Apparently some have been offered on drops, but I imagine some dealers hold out on some of the more special runs for preferred customers. Just my guess.

The harvester has been in my hand pretty much since I got it. Pretty useful tool, im gonna have to get creative with this cotton sampler though.

Yeah, I know. Its just the same people that preach this is a community also are quick to play the "don't you wish you were an insider" game and its kind of laughable. Like, just say where you got it, they're already GONE, lol. Cause if they really wanted to keep it quiet, the wouldn't take pics to parade around.

I am somewhat ambivalent about it all. On one hand, I prefer transparency, on the other, I understand it from a collector's viewpoint.

Regardless, unless one is pretty plugged in on some or all of the Facebook channels, one is apt to miss out on the smaller runs. Facebook is a non-starter for me, those that enjoy that arena can reap its rewards. I'm just happy to get at least one from a run that interests me these days through the regular means.

I was able to score a micarta Harvester recently, only to be notified by the dealer that they oversold their stock so I was then offered a Rosewood at the same price. I didn't pass it up and I just received it yesterday. It's a very nicely made knife, though I wish the pulls were firmer on a working knife this large.

KSF listed the ebony with the chechen yesterday. It wasn’t in their email, but was listed under new arrivals when they dropped the others.

BTW I didn’t list the dealer yesterday publicly because it’s a non paying dealer and I didn’t want to break the rules and also didn’t want to take the discussion too far off topic. If it makes you feel any better I’ve yet to land any 47s or 74s this run.

I think cotton sampler is the pattern that would be nice to have a spear pen blade on, if one needs a narrow tip for some delicate task. Would make much more sense here that on a knife with a clip or spear main blade which can provide the same function as well, unlike that wide spey-like scalpel thing.

Nice outcome Dylan!
Hope that happens to me. I have been searching the web for a 74 cotton sampler, wanting a rosewood one. Emailed several dealers that I have bought from before with no success.
Today I stumbled on one a dealer had, but with micarta. Completed the order about an hour ago.
It's an odd ball for sure but I Iike it.

ETA, got a tracking number so I'll will be getting the odd ball :D

There are many 'parcel Limbos' for a good knife than just Suomen Posti. More than we have trees in Iceland I bet 🤣
But don't worry!
The knife will be gifted to my father-in-law who lives abroad. His recent retirement and gardening enthusiasm will keep him pruning hard when summer comes.
Very glad to hear it's going to be used in a garden, most generous gesture on your part, the old guy is clearly lucky  it will be a very much liked worker.

The Cotton Sampler certainly IS an odd blade bbfish bbfish and that's why GEC should be praised for issuing it! Would make a tidy but expensive box cutter yes, might even be OK for slicing open smaller varieties of melon.

It is weird that this is my weakest pull GEC. I wouldn't mind if it was the strongest. (OK I guess the white owl is lighter)

I'll figure out how to use it soon enough. That being said, the harvester makes one of the best box cutters there is. Cardboard trembles before me.

I have one of these on the way. I was on the fence, but the oddness of the knife was compelling. I’m interested to see it in person.
Congrats on scoring one! I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. For me it was having an historical pattern that imho looks cool! Please post pics of yours.

By good fortune my Harvester and Cotton Sampler arrived in the mail on the same day.
Pardon my ignorance, but I wonder if these were more meant as "working" knives as there are some cosmetic issues I have never noticed on a GEC before.

The cotton sampler has a great action, but the blade itself has some spotting, you can see a polish mark where the mark was stamped on, but the rest of the blade is covered in "water spots" when you hold it up in the light. It was also dull out of the box.

The Harvester came sharp, but there is a small rust spot on the bolster already developing. Really light pull as well, but that isn't a complaint from me in particular.

Both knives are not flush when the blade is at the half stop. Maybe I should have shot for the rosewood version, maybe that was the higher end model. I just love micarta.

Thanks, need to upgrade my membership so I can do that! Perhaps this is the knife to do s

That’s disappointing, hopefully not the rule and maybe could be exchanged??
