GEC Abilene...did someone's wishes just come true?

I really want one of these when I can find one but I'm having a hard time convincing myself I need to spend the $ when I have my Case 6375.

It is big but what I always need:

@Clutchcarter that #85 is very nice looking, shame I missed that run, anyway, the Osage wood looks very different between the two knives, is that just how the photo came out, or is that how it is in person? it looks as if the #85 is crosscut wood, with a very opaque yellow, and the #81 is cut along the grain.

They do look very different in person. The 85 is much smoother and lighter colored, almost translucent. It may be cross cut, I'll have to look at it more closely. The Abilene has a more coarse/open grain.

Hi Folks,

I guess my post was sort of inappropriate for this thread, so I removed it.

My usual guy has the osage orange (drool)) I' ve just seen the stone moss green bone on the GEC site(slobber)
but to tell the truth I've been hankering for something with Copperhead Jigged bone for a couple of years now but not managed to hook one up.
If these are coming out in CHJB t'would be a great prize for me if I could get one.
Mike I know you don't ship to OS but I have connections stateside that would see it through to me -is that a possibility? Is it gonna be CHJB?
cheers

There is suppose to be a Copperhead in the Northfield.

I must have 20+ stockmans. But so far only one made by GEC, a beautiful stag Cripple Creek that they made awhile ago. I'm looking forward to a African Blackwood #81 Abilene Stock Knife (Northfield) to round out the collection. Hope they get finished soon.:) Since I have found GEC, I sure appreciate the quality of the workmanship and materials that go into them.

How is the blade pull on this model? I have a large Remington 9501 that all the blades are nail breakers.

Great, looks like I will be picking one of these up. I can't wait to see the yellow rose.

Yeah, leaning towards a Stag one, but need to see what the yellow rose bone looks like. One way or the other I will need one of these. Steven

I thought y'all would like to see some comparison shots of the 81; here it is along side a 66 Calf Roper, a Case 6392, and a Case 6375:

It compares closely with the Case 92; spring tension and blade size are similar, although the Case has hollow ground blades while the 81 has flat ground blades (which I prefer), and the weight is close with the Case weighing 3.3 oz and the 81 a slimmer 3 oz. The difference is noticeable in hand as the Case seems a little "clunkier" which surprised me. Also, the 81 has a little more width to the frame and a more pronounced curve while the Case has slightly larger bolsters. The spey blade on the Case rides somewhat higher in the frame than the same blade in the 81 making it slightly less comfortable to use with the spey closed.

The older 92's have always been a favorite of mine, but it looks like the honeymoon may be over. I'm going with the 81 for best overall due mainly to it's slimmer profile and flat ground blades. Two thumbs up for the folks at GEC!:thumbup:

@gunstockjack, that is a great comparison, I did have a 6292, so now I have a good idea of the exact proportions.
